reatogo XP off CD
This link is for the tools and instructions to build an entirely, self-sufficient Windows XP SP2 install which entirely runs off a CD.
Imagine the following scenarios:
* extreme hard system crashes with corrupted system-files, registries.
damaged filesystem - USUALLY you would need a Windows reinstall.
I had a crash like that a while ago - system was not bootable. Took me a lot of sweat and time to repair.
* system is infected with viruses and spyware.
You want a 100% safe/clean environment to load - and from where you do your cleaning and scanning.
* An "always the same" bootable environment where you can run benchmarks. Benchmark results vary a lot withing a WIndows environment and i think one use of this CD is to have certain benchmarking apps on them. The "XP on CD" is always the same so the benchmark results are far more reliable than running on various XP setups.
* A emergency/troubleshoot CD which you can take everywhere and will be your #1 cool "geek tool" - you can boot the CD with ANY computer since it doesn't matter what Windows is installed on the PC you're working with.
BUT OF COURSE...
The main purpose of such a CD is data recovery and repair.
I spent the whole weekend with the above set of tools and read A LOT on various forums (Bart's PE builder etc.)...and built me a bootable CD with those features:
* NTFS access
If you know normal "bootCDs" which only boot into DOS and need "NTFS tools" to see NTFS partitions you know what this means ! NTFS access is of course no big deal (you might think) - but if you dont have it because you're sitting in DOS and dont see the filesystem then you know what you're missing
* Explorer (it's basically a mini XP)
* Network access !!! (Was a biatch to setup for Nforce 4, but finally got it working !)
* Firefox, Internet Explorer (of course i use only FireFox
* Antivir Personal Virus scanner.
Allows to boot on the CD and then start a script to download latest virus definitions and then scan/clean any volume - WITHOUT the intereference of a infected XP install. The CD will always be clean
* Adaware SE. Similiar as above. Scan for spyware right off the CD
* Symantec Ghost 8.0 - backup and restore whole volumes and drives back and forth.
* PerfectDisk defragger (not really necessary, just included it out of boredom)
* PartitionMagic 8.05
* GetDataBack NTFS - serious file recovery
* HandyRecovery 2.0 - anotehr disaster/file recovery program
* Nero (for burning and saving recovered data on CD/DVD, etc.)
* Everest SystemInfo and various benchmarking modules
I am sure i forgot some tools i have on there.
As said, all this runs entirely off CD.
I just remember a while ago i had a hard time to even run a simple checkdisk on a damaged XP install - and now i basically have this emergency CD which provides all this and more.
Check out this link and read around regarding this topic, look at the reatogo website and Bart's PE builder and build yourself your own XPE
reatogo is basically the "enhanced" version of the Bart's PE set - with explorer support etc. and it automatically downloads (if shareware) / copies (if already installed on your HD) the needed plugins and files (for the programs you want to use.
There are hundreds/thousands of 3rd party plugins already written ranging from drivers for various hardware to a wide range of apps and tools.
You can select what you want/need and compile yourself your ultimate BootCD which then will be built off your XP SP2 CD/install.
One HANDY feature (it's a little advanced, tho) is that you can build a whole XPE CD and boot on it - right on your HD using XP multiboot.
(Saves you burning CDs - just burn the one where, after MANY attempts, everything works - and otherwise test with booting onto your HD instead of burning dozens of CDs
).
