howdy

I am trying to find a great pair of speakers that cost me less then $120, shipped. I have been searching and searching, and so far, i have come to the conclusion that anything more then $120 on a 2.1 system is a waste of money, and anything less then $230+ on a 5.1 system is a waste of money. I went to compusa and i heard the Logitech Z-2300s, Z-5300s. The 2300s are a $120 2.1 system and sound incredible, and the 5300s are a $150 5.1 that sound weak.

I am heavily in favor the Logitech Z-2300s, but i was wondering if TW knew of any great speakers at this price range ($120 and less). Even better, is there a speakers site that reviews them? Anandtech, Tomshardware dont, and google is not really helping me all that much.

Thanks AT

You can ditch "computer speakers" and certainly get your money's worth out of a more expensive 2.1 system.

If you're looking for mainly music, then a 2.1 system is a great bet. For movies and games, then a 5.1 system is the way to go generally (if you can set it up well).

Right along this pricepoint, I would also suggest Klipsch Promedias as a Logitech alternative. They were $99 on Amazon yesterday.

There is kind of a lack of decent computer speaker reviews out there. Honestly I think it's just that the kind of target audience they're aiming to please doesn't really have a community out there that reviews these things well. Sites that review computer hardware are quite good at getting the cold hard numbers down for framerates and such, but something more subjective like sound isn't really up their alley.

Yes, the Z-2300s are great set. The first time I heard a set playing, I knew they were going to be my next set of speakers. Almost two years later, I'm still using them.

You can also consider headphones for moreSQ for the buck, while sacrifcing bodyshaking bass and the multi-person listening thing. Something like a Grado SR-125, used Sennheiser HD595/new HD555, or Alessandro MS1 would do you good.

hell, the speakers are not for me. I am quite content with my Z-560s in surround sound glory. These new speakers are for the laptop of a friend. She will never game and just wants good music and sometimes movie speakers. Keep in mind, these speakers are going into whatever generic integrated sound card is in her dell laptop, so Audigy 2or X-Fi it is not.

^^Ahh, then I highly recommend the Alessandro MS-1s. But depending on how big of a factor comfort is (they are modded grados, so meh) she may want the Sennheiser HD555s instead. Both great cans.

I agree that headphones are going to get you much better sound quality, but sometimes it just has to be speakers :p

yep, she wants speakers to blare her music at our frequent parties. While i do appreciate the headphones suggestions (ESP since i just got a NICE pair of Sennheiser HD 280 Pros for xmas), lets keep this to speakers only. THanks AT!

what you really want to do is run your music to a regular stereo system for playing music at parties.

If you have the space for them and loud is what you're after, then that would certainly be an option :)
