I've been getting a bunch of hard freezes lately. Actually I just noticed them today. Half Life 2 hard froze after 2 hours, but after checking system temps nothing was particularly overheated. Then I came across some webpages that would hard freeze my machine (gamespy, forumplanet ones). What the heck is going on here? Bad bios, mobo? Drivers? Argh! How can I diagnose this problem?

bump. I used memtest to test the memory but it worked fine for several hours. What else could be the cause?

I can assure you the problem is not malware. It has happened with two seperate fresh formats, with literally no software installed other then windows updates.

Well the system crashed while sitting idle at the desktop after a fresh format, the only thing I had installed were the via 4in1 drivers so I think that is the culprit. I did run memtest86 for several hours and it had no problems. I also thought about it being a PSU problem, but the fact that half life 2 ran fine for a couple hours before freezing while it can freeze after 20 minutes idle on the desktop leads me to rule that out as well. I'll see if it crashes without the via drivers and if so, then I'm all set.

Sounds like a power issue, or maybe even a bad stick of memory. Check the voltages in your bios for the power supply, see if any look particularly low. Check the capacitors on the motherboard, see if any are bulging or have crud leaking out. Maybe even run memtest and see if your memory sticks are good. Have you added any new hardware to the system lately?

Well as I said I ran memtest and it came up with no errors. It's a new system I just built, by the way. And if it was a power issue, why would battlefield 2 and half life 2 work fine (at least for a while) but the desktop and IE cause hard freezes? I can check the voltages when I get home but I have the feeling that is not where the problem is.

Does anyone know of instances where the via drives cause problems, such as hard freezes?

hm, maybe it is a driver problem indeed, a reinstall without installing via drivers could confirm this. what windows version do u use, cuz id never underestimate malware and virus, some are faster than u can say security patch. but if u sorted that already out, okay.
since u just built it, maybe something went wrong with the hardware installation, check all power connecters, 20pin, 4pin..and make sure theres no contact between board and case. Check Jumpers.
maybe the board needs a bios update.
scan ur hdd with a tool for errors.
are there blue screens or error reports? or just a simple reboot?
frankly i dont know, theres too many variables, just try to find the faulty part like u already did ;)
