I got my best AS5 application ever by putting a very small blob (maybe 1/4 the size of a rice grain) in the center of my Barton core and letting my my waterblock spread it as I tightened it down. I checked it after a couple days and there was the thinnest layer of thermal compound I had ever seen and it was perfectly even.
I used it this method on my 9800 pro too. It worked great.

I take saran wrap and put that tightly on the tip of my finger. Then I dab the core with 1 bb sized dot of AS3 and keep taking off more and more thermal grease until I can barely see the color of the core. I get the lowest idle temps. 30C on SilentBoost w/ Barton 2500+.

i put it on nice and thick so it oozes of the die then out off the socket, its realy the best for overclocking.

btw who can tell ive been up all night

but realy I put 2 or 3 small dot of as5 on the center of the core and it spread with a plastic bag over my fingers, I add as5 as needed or better yet if needed.
