Power just went out in a bustling town of North NJ facing hudon river.

1.The street is pitch dark. Street lights are out too.

2. Ugh I have to reset all my digital clocks.

3. The weather is clear all day. Although today was prob the first hottest day all year 90 today, 50-60s high last week.

4. Interestinf that my 4G internet works. Phone at 60% after that I'm going dark. SEND HALP!!111!!!11one

Haha fun. Cell will work for a while, cell towers and telecom COs/fibre huts etc are all on big batteries. If power outage ETR is too far out they'll send a generator and hook up to it. Some sites can be good for like 12+ hours on battery. Some multiple days. At least that's how it works here. Large scale power outages make for a crazy busy work day managing all that. We had a nasty storm a few weeks ago and I was on shift, not fun.

Been warming up here too, I actually used the AC yesterday, it was like 22 outside. Did not quite need it, but it was getting a little warm in here and figured it's a good time to test it for the season. :D

I live in the most bustling town of North NJ facing the Hudson River. I could walk to the water in 10 min. Power here is good to go.

The weather was unusually hot but not too bad. Besides the fact my car's AC needs to be recharged. That sucks.

Clear day, power goes out... Sounds like a Southern Company power grid.
You sure about that? 94 here yesterday and I still have power. I'm more inclined to believe it's similar to the southern black ice phenomenon. The coefficient of friction is way lower here. Heat in NJ/NY may just be way hotter at 94 degrees and the grid can't handle it.

Saying that sometimes around my neck of the woods, power just goes down for hours on clear, mild days.

100+ degrees with 90%+ humidity, and everyone with their ACs maxed out? Not a single hiccup.

I remember a good while ago in my hometown, half the city went dark. Squirrel apparently mis-timed a leap, took out a main substation.

That is a regular occurrence. Fortunately not at my house or office but the bank across the street gets hit. Some how they're on 2 separate services (makes no sense). A tree rat commits suicide and half of the building goes dark. They still lock the doors until it's fixed.

Same thing on my street. Across the street can have no power and we will be fine or vice versa.

We're at the end of a dogleg. 2 ice storms ago, everyone around us had power and we were still in the dark. Last one, I had a generator while everyone else was in the dark.:D

Whine....

Live in the mountains and you will have the power company's outage line on speed dial. Seriously, we loose power on average of every 6 weeks, sometimes it's weather, last time was a crispy racoon.

How do you make it loose? Put a crowbar up against all those electrons?

Northern Virginia got it bad. Power went out in some places. My movie stopped.
I went out front to buy a root beer (5 fucking dollars) and when I came back they already had it started again. I think I missed an important plot element.
Also, really bad accident on highway 28. Major pile up of cars. Gonna take all night to clear I bet.

I heard the transformer in my cul de sac pop, look at it and smoke billowed out. Called the power company, crew showed up in ten min. Left after looking at the box. Come back half an hour later with a new transformer and bigger crew.

Total outage about two hours. I guess I got lucky this happened on a no crisis day.

Was it a pad or pole transformer? Because, man, when those pad transformers go up, it's a spectacle.

It was in the upper 80s here most of the week and we had storms pass through. We didn't have power for about 36 hours because the wind knocked down the lines to my house. Power came back this morning around 3AM. Good thing because it's 43 degrees outside right now lol. Might have to turn the heat on after a 40 degree temperature drop over a 36 hour period.

Sitting on the ground so pad? It didn't catch fire, just puff, white smoke and blackened concrete.
