Well, I just bought an X1900XT just to do F@H on one of my boxes that already does it. I wonder if both cores of the CPU can also work at the same time ? (opteron 170@2.5)

I'm wondering if the GPU client will use system RAM or just the video card's on-board RAM. 3 copies of F@H running with 1GB RAM is pretty tight...

Good point ! If so, I am going to 2 gig right away !

ooh it says they will expand into other versions of ati gfx cards too, beside 1900.. So after all my beastly x800xl won't be useless 🙂 soon..

First, my useless AMD X2 CPU wasn't good enough for the QMD WUs ..... now my sleazy NVidia video card isn't good enough for the F@H folks either.

I guess I could always downgrade my video and slow down my CPU so F@H will work.......

First of all ATi video is not slower than Nvidia. The x1950xtx actually matches the 7950gx2 in many areas and beats it in some. It's close but slightly slower in certain areas too (depends on game and resolution etc).

Secondly I don't think anyone is telling you an X2 is slow, but if you're talking about downgrading to Intel let me remond you that the C2D is alot faster than any X2. Not a downgrade.

So what if some people will be getting better scores thanks to their GPU. That doesn't mean your work is worthless now.

Sid, if you read, you'll see that ATI is simply faster than Nvidia for this kind of processing, there aren't any favorites being played here. I'm not going to even touch the AMD-Intel QMD WU thing, but that's purely a stupid bureaucratic matter with licensing.

Yeah, AGP - I could put one of those in my current, but a little outdated system!

The GPU beta client uses quite a bit of CPU from what I've read. They are looking into what can be done to use the CPU less.

Can anyone confirm if 256MB video card memory is enough or is it worth it to get 512MB for folding?

i have a 256 meg card running right now 🙂

1900xt running at xtx speeds. the frame rates aren't as high (about 8 min per frame) but still around 600ppd. hopefully they will be as efficient as its big brother only time will tell..

That's also what I have read - the higher memory cards are faster but bang for the buck is definitely a consideration.

Wiz, I'll be a very likely candidate. I still have two perfectly good AMD 64/Opteron 165 systems with AGP.
Whether I buy two of them may depend on how close to Christmas present buying time it is.

Well you know the longer you wait the lower the price will be.
I'll not be able to get one until after Christmas myself, (6 kids, wife, loads of nieces & nephews, friends, mother in law...)

I don't want to discourage anyone, but the GPU client is still in beta testing, just so you know going forward. It seems they have gotten some bugs worked out already and it should not be too long before it goes gold.

I know they wanted some "beta" beta testers to try some new WUs before releasing to the open beta testers, but the regular beta testers didn't realize the testing flag was needed 😕 and they released them to the open people. They do try to be careful about what they release to the public.
