Great...I think my roof has a leak.

Private house or apartment?

Leaks are seldom actually directly below the source of the leak/hole. You need to get up in the attic/on the roof or have the apartment complex' folks get up in the crawlspace (sounds....kinky...) and see where the actual leak is and patch it.

we need to get the roof redone. i just hate calling a place to come check it out. always get the feeling they are going to rip me off. say that it needs to be redone even when it does not to make some money.

That's what I'm doing this weekend. I get to crawl up there and fix the leak in the chimney stack. It's been raining and f'ing cold for the last couple of weeks and is finally nice and not raining so I hope I can get it done before it starts raining again.

Ice dam, maybe? If that's it, you can release the dam and the water will flow away.

Hey, I hadnt thought of that. The temps were finally warmer for a few days (prior to today anyway) after weeks of snow and cold for the most part.

but would that "fix" the leak? so wouldnt you still need to have someone check it out?

I definitely will be having someone clammer up there and look into it.

Chances are they will try.

Well, if you have an attic instead of vaulted ceilings, it would be relatively easy to figure out where the leak is if you just go up there with a flashlight.

Most likely, it will be near the flashing on the chimney, due to water infiltration and the associated expansion when it freezes. Just climb on up there and look at the boards... that will give you a good idea of where the leak is at.
