Great, I can't install Radeon 7500 drivers under XP, what do I do?

Hey all,
I'm building a computer for a freind. It's almost the same setup as mine (Windows XP Pro, Athlon 1.4, EpoX 8KHA+) except I have a R8500 and he wanted a R7500. Now here's the problem, when I try to install the drivers of the CD they didn't work. No surprize really, since the CD was made before XP was released.

So I download the newest Radeon 7500 XP drivers and try them, still doesn't work. It says I don't have a compatible display adapter after I install them. When I go to the hardware manager t says it's using some default VGA driver and it doesn't seem to be able to figure out what card I'm using (under name, ram, serial, etc it just says not available).

So what do I do? Is there some know issue with the Radeon 7500 and XP?

Thanks,
Justin Sampson

I've been having the same freaking problems. Also, if I do manage to get it installed , it tells me my Radeon 7000 is a 7200/VE??

WTF??

Well at least I'm not alone.

:)

How did you manage to get them installed? It just won't plain work 100% of the time.

all I did was in Device Manager Remove the installed Display Adapter when prompted for Restart said "No/Cancel" then unpacked the WHQL certified Ati drivers 6.13.10.6015 and then when done rebooted.

ScrapSilicon: I did what you said (I think so anyway) but I have the exact same problem still. I removed "VGA Compatible Adapter" and restarted. I was prompted to install a driver and I hit cancle and I ran the exe driver that I downloaded but it did the exact same thing.

Anyone else know what to do? I really need to get this working! :(

Same problem with Radeon LE TVO & W2K with last two released drivers (6014 & 6025 beta). Solution: use INF file from leaked beta 6018.

I'm having the exact same problem here yet no-one bothered responding.

It is good that others are having the same problem as me because it means that it's likely ATi's fault rather than my rig.

What's up with ATi? Did they not even bother testing to see if the installer works under XP or something? That's absolutely shocking.

Solution: use INF file from leaked beta 6018.

I don't want to use Windows 2000 INF files under XP. Is there a similar solution for XP? Because there are only two drivers available and I've tried both of them.

If any of you have onboard video that could be causing the problem but I don't know if any of your boards have onboard video. If so thats needs to be diabled if it hasnt already. Another solution is remove the VGA adapter and restart or point the VGA adapter to the ATI drivers. These solutions have prob been said already but I am in a hurry and can't read all the posts.

No onboard video for me and no standard VGA adapter either because XP detects the card automatically and installs the drivers. But when I reboot I get a garbled screen.

I've been running my Ti500 for months without a problem. Like I said before, I suspect ATi's POS installer as the culprit especially since there's a similar issue reported in the ATi FAQ about Radeon SDRs and Windows 2000. The solution is to get newer drivers.

Wow. I started a thread about this too for my bro. He had recently built a system that at first seemed to work fine with a Powercolor Radeon, delivered it, then had to bring it back because it would lock up after 10 minutes or so(it worked fine before delivering it). Like described here, no newer drivers(the default Radeon drivers installed fine in WinXP) would install(they'd say hardware not found), he even tried an authentic ATI Radeon 7200 and the same error would appear. He updated all mobo, WinXP, etc drivers, still no go.

Anyway, to make a long story short, in desperation he tried a different mobo and the problems disappeared. The original mobo was an MSI KT7 Pro(VIA KT133), he replaced it with an ECS K7S5A(SiS 735). I'm curious as to whether everyone having this problem are using VIA chipsets?

I (briefly) had a 7500 and I could not find drivers that would recognize the card. In my case I got one of those unfortunate 'powered by ATI' cards. It was made by Sapphire and not ATI, and used underclocked 5.5ns RAM vs 4ns on ATI-made ones. These cards are trouble, I found other posts on rage3d from people who could not get the cards to install either. Most of these seem to be the $96 ones from Newegg, who *still* are selling them under the ATI category (should be ATI OEM).

Lemme clarify my experience. The driver install (setup or manual) reports they are not compatible with the adapter. There is no hardware or software malfunction and the denial of installation causes no problems and seems only the fault of the ATII2KAG.INF not including all variations of Radeon hardware.

So, if it is with XP you're having the same problem then use the INF from the last XP driver that installed okay.

Otherwise, maybe there are some other issues you're experiencing. I agree ATI must have shat the bed though.

I installed XP Pro yesterday, and had no problems with the 7500. XP didn't recognize the card at first, but after d/ling the official XP drivers from the ATI website... all is good.

Thanks for the help guys. When I run power strp it says it's running at 250/183 which is way off from where it should be. Maybe I have a bad card?

<edit>Auric: Could you give me some more detials on using the .inf file? Where can I find it and what do I do with it? Thanks!</edit>

Except there are only two XP drivers for the VE/7000 and I've tried both of them.

Anyone else think we should email this thread to ATI?

I don't think they'd care. I emailed their tech support and got nothing but a crappy automated email which basically pointed back to their website.

Quite frankly shipping an installer that doesn't recognise your own products is absolutely unacceptable.

Ummm.... I installed a radeon 7500 on WinXP Pro with an ECS K7S5A, I had no problem whatsoever... This was a brand new system (fresh install), and I used the 3276 drivers.
Is your card an official ATI CARD? Is your monitor correctly configured (ie are you using the correct .inf file for your monitor?). I've installed 4 different sets of drivers so far, and I haven't had a problem.

Icecool: Interesting. In my previous post I stated that my bro used that same mobo and had no problem whatsoever. I'm thinking this could be a chipset issue.

My card is a genuine ATi. I'll be able to test the motherboard theory later on when I set up my new Intel rig. Just for reference my current motherboard uses a VIA KT133a chipset.

I thought the 3xxx drivers were Windows 2000 drivers? The 6xxx drivers are the only ones listed under the Radeon VE/7000 for Windows XP.
