That's a really petty way to justify your prejudices. But I'm not surprised that your sort can't have a serious argument without resorting to childish insults.

Childish insults? I'm sorry, but it seems like in every thread where someone says something against fat people, you're there to defend. I came to a conclusion and it made sense. In a argument/debate, you use everything you've got. Does this not count?

Grow some thicker skin and come back at me with something better. It doesn't have to be an insult, it just has to make sense.

Now I know you're lying -- I've been away from AT for the last year or so (only started posting again last week). Plus the only time I can remember defending fat people was when someone said something rude about Nik (and I certainly haven't done it since I returned). You're clearly talking out of your ass.

I'm amazed you think you can win an argument with name calling and lies. How old are you?

Aside from any other conditions (smells, looks like he'll shank me, snores like an ass), I'll gladly sit next to any black, asian, muslim, jew, whatever over a fat person that'll steal my armrest and squish my legs when he exits the row to go to the bathroom on the plane. That black/asian/muslim/jew/whatever probably won't have a problem getting xrayed in a regular hospitol either and force stupid ass cities to spend money on elephant lifts and extra wide ambulances.

I must be mistaken then. Lying wasn't my intention, my memory is poor. I'm sorry if I referred to an incident that didn't occur.

I'm 18, and age has little or nothing to do with the topic at hand. If you've got some counter-argument as to why being obese is not a problem, then I'd like to hear it.

I never said it wasn't a problem, just that people don't deserve to be insulted simply because of how they look.

At the moment a fat person inconveniences you (say, on the plane), there's nothing they can do about their weight. And the overwhelming majority can't be motivated to get thinner with insults. All the name calling does is make people resentful. If you want to effect actual change, there are lots of better ways to do it.

But I think it's pretty obvious that this thread wasn't made to address real issues like that -- it's just an opportunity for people to make fun of some stigmatized group. And that's ugly.

God damn, learn to get a sense of humor.

And yes the whole point is they CAN do something about their weight. Maybe not on their own, but with help.

It's not about how they look, it's about the inconveniences it causes them and others, as Kelvrick mentioned above.

At the moment a fat person inconveniences you (say, on the plane), there's nothing they can do about their weight.
Why wait until that happens? Why wait until your weight becomes a problem for me before you even think about doing something about it?

And the overwhelming majority can't be motivated to get thinner with insults. All the name calling does is make people resentful. If you want to effect actual change, there are lots of better ways to do it.
It's been tried. People just don't get the hint anymore. Fewer and fewer people are seeing it as a problem.

But I think it's pretty obvious that this thread wasn't made to address real issues like that -- it's just an opportunity for people to make fun of some stigmatized group. And that's ugly.
It was supposed to be in good fun until you decided to interrupt with your whole "why not asians or blacks?" argument. Do you think mothers are insulted by yo-momma jokes, or blonds by blond jokes? I would like to think not.

I think this should be your key point. Society is becoming too accomodating to fat people.

Well I AM rather fat (6' 215lbs and not healthy pounds) and I can see the humor in this thread. Of course I'm not what anyone would call obese, but there is a tendency in my family to become so.

Now that I'm out of junior high I realize that some of the "fat jokes" that I was subjected at one time are rather funny now that I don't have to deal with them anymore. In high school I was in rather good shape through weight training and football, but I have pretty much fallen off of the exercise wagon and have regained quite a bit of my former "chubbiness". Oh well, I will rejoin the ranks of the slim and healthy or I will die from my own excessive consumption. I still find "You so fat" jokes to be incredibly funny.

It just annoys me to see people on ATOT buy into this juvenile garbage to the point that they'll spend significant energy defending and justifying it. It's one thing to make offensive jokes and write it off as low-brow goofing, it's quite another to stake your own integrity on it and claim it's the Right Thing To Do.

Back when I first started posting here, things sure seemed a lot classier. Now it's just the same kiddy junk and brainless chatter every day.

Hey, not nice! I used to be fat. :( :|

That being said, we have a friend that always says (when someone picks on him), "Oh sure, just pick on the fat kid. He has no feelings!"

I am too. Fat people and smokers bear the brunt of my cruel sense of humor. I made a 60 year old manatee cry in Walmart last week. I'm heading to an express checkout lane with 3 items in my hands, when she barrels in front of me into the line with a basket full of sh!t. I nudge my friend (having someone there to support you makes it much easier) and start in, "Are you too dumb to read, too stupid to count, or so inconsiderate that you don't care that the sign says 10 items or less? Or maybe all that fat has pushed the good sense out of your mouth?"

There was a shockwave of silence surrounding us, everywhere looking back and forth between Shamoo and myself. She turned, looking angry, and opened her mouth for a second. She was about to fight back when my friend jumped in to finish her off, "I bet that's the longest your mouth's ever been open without you shoving food in it, huh?" She immediately began crying, left her basket of items and walked out of the store. Muffled laughter could be heard all around, but most people were just shaking their heads in disgust at my cruelty.

So there you go, a day in the life of Nebor. :p
