Great 8800GT After-Market Cooler Round-up .....

besides the hr-03gt, which can be placed on the back side of the card, are there any other single slot solutions? i don't have any free pci slots for these multi-slot coolers.

also, does XFX condone the use of after-market coolers? yes, i know we can just put the original back on before any service is needed, but from reading their warranty terms, it's says xfx can charge to replace/repair non-original parts or portions thereof. so does that mean the card itself would be under warranty, just not the cooler?

xfx warranty:
XFX reserves the right to claim shipping fees as well as a service charge* for any incomplete or modified Product that is returned and that requires repair or replacement, or when the Owner is not entitled to any coverage under the XFX Double Lifetime Protection
...
* Service charge is variable based upon actual material costs to repair or replace missing or modified parts to return them to original factory condition.

My last AGP card was a XFX 7950GT and I spent quite a bit of time browsing their support forum. This question came up several times while I was there, and their support Rep said, as long as you put the original cooler back on and there is no damage to the PCB, it's no problem using an after-market cooler. As far as the XFX disclaimer goes, I think that's geared for the people who would send their cards in for RMA with an after-market cooler still attached. Can't believe anyone would actually do that owever.

Thanks good review.

Can someone with an S1 and using a 120mm fan tell me how many slots it blocks? Or how about the HR-03GT with a 120mm fan? It looks like the HR-03GT might block 3 slots even. Wow

Here is a thread in silentpcreview.com discussing the Accelero S1 in details including how many slots it blocks but you have to read through the thread to find that info. IIRC, Accelero S1 with 120mm fan would block 3 slots.

Lots of good info there, thanks

One other question, does anyone have this with the Antec Nine Hundred case? It seems like it might pose a problem with the side fan on this case

I'm surprised how badly the oem cooler performed compare with the aftermarkets.

I'm not at all

Out of curiosity, do you own an 8800GT? You have to crank the fan up so damn high under load to keep it cool, it's ridiculous.

Or you could just leave it be and let it run.

The card runs fine under load at the default 29% fan speed.

Doesn't the S1 do that? I think I remember seeing a review that showed a blank plate w/ perforations that came with the S1. Looks like the plate on the 8800GTS/GTX/Ultra cooler.

Are you joking? Even at stock speeds the temps this card gets can't be good for it, much less OC'd.

Aftermarket cooler is the only option for those of us who jumped early. It looks like the new fan cools better and isn't even as loud when it ramps up (which it still needs to do). Those of us with the early version need to go aftermarket or live with the fan when it ramps up, and trust me this thing is a leafblower.

Spot the pictures with the exhaust plate? There are many more reviews...

That's great. Thanks very much for the review links Dude. Did you see Arctic Cooling's Website link to the S1 I gave you? All they mentioned was the Voltage Regulator Heat-Spreader and make no reference to an exhaust plate. So, looks like you were right about the back vent plate.

Even with the back vent plate, I really don't think the S1 can be considered a traditional dual slot-cooler which would normally have a shroud enclosing the PCB and active cooling which forces air out of the back of the case. The back vent plate wouldn't make anymore of a difference than leaving a normal slot cover off altogether. Love the overall design of that S1 though, that is one spankin heatsink and according to those reviews it does one helluva job.

Here is a link with Pics to someone on HardForum using an Accelero S1 with a 8800GT ....

Maybe not a leafblower...but definitely a hair dryer. 😀 Assuming finances are looking good after Christmas, I will be getting a Zf900 for the GT and a Scythe Ninja for my CPU 🙂

I think it's more like an Electric Shaver actually. 🙂 Good choice on the Zalman and just so you know, they make two different models. The one without the fancy LEDs is much cheaper and cools just the same.
