Now that some of you readers helped me out finding the MAYA learning edition link I was searching for, it suddenly occured to me to let you know about a great 3D CAD program you can get for free (non-commercial use) at Pro Desktop
It does a great job of 3D CAD at an irresistable price (you only have to fill out a form to get the authorization key). Its limitation (conveniently co-incidental to the upcoming Maya release) is that it doesn't do fancy rendering, though it does enough to make spinning your object around as you're working on it neat.
