Does anybody know how important GRE scores are when applying to Grad school?
I just took the test today and I'm afraid I didn't do very well.

Does it tend to be a big factor?

depends on the program and a few other factors.

in general, schools have three criteria at their disposal, GRE scores, undergrad GPA, and letters of recommendation. For strong programs you need to have 3 of 3 strong. For middle programs then 2 of 3 is probably good. That said, for some programs, you also need to consider whether or not there is a good match between you and a likely advisor. Most advisors only have so many slots, especially for funding.

what are you going to study?

Yes, it's important. But you can take it more than once, so don't worry too much. I messed-up the first time and ended-up at an Ivy after doing better the 2nd.

there should be some guidelines available somewhere. Check with the programs you are most interested in and ask if they track the average GRE scores for their incoming students.

definitely consider retaking it.
