Gray bars progress before XP logo at startup

Hi,
I have this progress gray bars at the bottom of the screen during start up right before the XP logo.
Anybody knows what this is?

Very few times I have formatted or upgraded a PC to XP have I gotten these progress bars. I would like to know the reason why I'm getting them?

That happened to me a few times but it has not been doing it lately.

I believe it is the.NET framework that is being loaded at startup. I installed XP Home SP2 not long ago on a relatives computer and it didn't start having the gray bar thing until after I downloaded the .NET v1.1 framework from WindowsUpdate.

i guess it has something to do with start up items....and amount of RAM.........i have two systems almost identical config.......one has 256mb RAM....and othe has 768mb ............the one with 768mb always shows those grey loadin bars........even after a clean fresh intallation of XP!!!!.................

I dont think it is the framework, I installed XP when it was first out on a fairly slow laptop, a 650mhz and it did that, but then my mums dell laptop is almost the same and is 700mhz and it doesnt do that. must be something to do with the startup process

The "grey loading bar" is the part of bootup you don't see unless the hard disk is fragmented, or just plain slow.

It's not .NET Framework, and it doesn't depend on the amount of RAM, as nothing's loaded at that point. Windows is hardly likely to load a 256Mb+ file as the kernel.

It's not related to CPU speed.

I usually get the grey bar when I bring my laptop out of hibernation, but that's the only time I really notice it
