I'll hold out for a steam sale. I tried the demo, more a tower defense than rts space battle. You pick your load out and send your fleet in. Not a bad time waster but I don't think it's worth the current price.

Yes it works on 64-bit. Impulse isn't bad. If you're so anal about it, just take them off autorun. Then it's just like any other application on your machine.

I prefer Impulse, since you don't need the client open to run the game (just to DL the game, or to update it). But Steam usually has better deals, so it may be a good idea to wait for a Steam sale.

Impulse is not Steam. Gamespy is not Steam either, it's something entirely different.

Impulse doesn't need to be running to run the game. It's only used to download and update the game.
