If you like the Dead an even hotter deal is alt.bianaries.gdead and alt.binaries.gdead.highspeed.
3 or 4 live shows posted every week in the lossless shorten format, 100% free and legal to you (Grateful Dead Org. allows trading of live shows). Over the last 3 years I have collected over 700 shows of taper friendly bands downloaded off of usenet or ftp.
cloudchief, those newsgroups are definately the greatest (or is that gratest?). I've gotten tons of stuff from the dead groups. Do you have Louisville, July 6, 1990? Please PM me if you do.
Wow we are every where.
I have a stupid question. I just found out about this. Now I need to find out what to do with downloaded .shn file formats? What are they? How do I listen to them? What do I need?

Check out www.etree.org. Go to the software section - that should help out.
Another place to get lots of taper friendly bands in both .SHN and MP3 formats is Furthur. It a %100 legit file sharing program like napster and allows for transferring files from multiple sources at the same time. It also automatically MD5 verifies the shows after they are completed. A lot easier than dealing with clogged ETree FTP's in my opinion. There is also a SHN hub on direct connect if anybody uses that program. I dont know how I managed to listen to MP3's for so long, even >160kbps encoded.
