Grass seed question

I live in the Southeast (North Carolina) so the climate gets pretty hot/humid in the Summer. My two dogs have managed to tear my back yard up pretty good this winter. Couple sections just down to dirt now and some other high traffic areas in need of some work.

My soil is very mature, dark and loose. I have bought fescue in the past but it seems to be really thin and easy to die (from heat and traffic). Can anyone here recommend a stronger grass seed? I'm looking for something that can hold up to better foot traffic and heat. And something that doesn't look so thin/fragile like the fescue does. Also, something that may turn yellow in the cold months but won't die. Hoping to plant sometime next month if I feel the last frost has come/gone.

Do you have a TSC (Tractor Supply Company) near you?

They sell about 6-8 different varieties of loose grass seed in the Spring. You can go in there and buy it by the pound......good prices and they have lots of varieties. Plus, their staff would be able to tell you what grows good in your area.

Usually sun and shade make a difference on what kind of grass will grow best. Just be sure to fertilize it and water it every day for a week or two after you plant.

I'll see if I can get a hold of my brother. He majored in Agronomy and is a manager at LESCO.

If I get a hold of him I'll post in here what he says.

my brother said the best bet would be Bermuda grass. He said you are still far enough North that it will turn yellow/brown in the winter (but not die) and that it is a very tough grass that will withstand the traffic of people walking on it, and that it'll be very green in the right seasons.

He also commented that the fescue is a good grass but just does not hold up to the traffic on it.

So yea, he recommended that your best bet would definitely be Bermuda gass. Good luck!

Look for the warm season grasses, Bermuda, Zoysia, etc...

The down side is they brown in the winter time, but you can overseed it with winter rye (which is cheap and an annual grass).

Unforetunately nothing really holds up to heavy traffic from the doggies. Either place obstacles that force them to change their path frequently or just get used to their permenant paths

Call your local County Extension office. I reiterate Centipede. Although it is slow growing, it stands some wear, will grow in anything, is warm season in our region, handles drought well, and is lower maintenance. Like iron and will grow in clay (Western NC)

Thanks for the tips. Definitely gives me some info I can research now and hopefully solve some yard problems. The trouble spots all get full sun for most of the day so I shouldn't have a problem getting things to germinate/grow. It's just 2 months later that I'm concerned about.
