I'm having trouble deciding on which model to choose from TI... my friends say 89 and 84
89 is hard to use
and 84 for its simplicity

I've never used any of them ... but is the 89 really that hard to use?

alg 2... then calculus.... stats? (does stats even need a calc.) ...and whatever math comes after that

what, you're insane, the 89 is easier to use than any of the other ti-models. All you have to do is hit "HOME" to get to the calucation screen. If that one thing makes it hard, then so be it. But the other ones are slow, their screens suck, and it's impossible to navigate around unless you know where you're going because you can't read ******. Hell, you even get an icon navigated main screen on the titanium (and you can install it on the old version too). Also, if you're ever going to take stats, you'll basically be required to have an 89, you can do it with an 83, as it is a "stats" calculator, but the only benefit it has over the 89 are a few list variable buttons--which only take another two presses on the 89 anyay. The stats program for the 89 just blows it out of the water.

For all intensive purposes, the 84 is just an overglorified scientific calculator that can do graphs and play some ****** games. For anything real, you'll want an 89.

and oh yeah, with the 89, you can actually see the formula you type in as it should be, not just a random line of crap that you have to decifer. The 84 and such can do derivatives and integrals, but you'll have a hell of a time trying to figure out what you're putting in and getting out. Once again, the 89 actually displays it as a formula that you would see in a book. I don't know if the 84 does symbolic representation of things like infiniti either; I know the 83 doesn't, instead you have to type a really big number like 100000.

I'm sure the TI89 would be as easy to use as the TI84, it's just a matter of getting used to it I think. The TI89 can come in handy in your calc class but is not required. If we ever really needed to use the TI89 we would have a class set.

I would get the TI84. Many times you won't be allowed to use the TI89 on tests and stuff because of the extra things that it can do. Sometime the TI83+ (older version of the TI84) was the one we allowed to use on tests, so you might as well get used to the 84. I've stuck with my TI83 through my calc/diff eq and have never needed more than that. In fact most of the time we never even had to use a calculator. I use my 83 with physics and other engineering classes right now, and its all I need.

Edit: Ok I change my mind lol...read my other post below

The only tests I've ever taken including high school and college have just been limited to no calc or no graphing, nothing about an 89. None of my AP tests restricted the 89 outside of no calc.

The screen / formula display on my 89 is one of my favorite things about it.

The only downside to it is I think I got too dependent on it :p

But yes, I do think the TI-89 is better...and personally I like it better as well...and I wouldn't mind having it now, for there aren't any restrictions on the graphing calculator to use (it's always either a scientific calc or any graphing).

mmk ... another question... what does the Ti89 have/does better than what the Ti84 can offer?

It can do integration and 3d graphs among a lot of other extra stuff I bet. It also has a higher resolution screen and you are able to navigate up and down through it. It can simplify in terms of variables for you and can factor out stuff as well...

Now that I think of it, the TI89 is probably a better calculator to get for the long-term. I wouldn't mind having one right now. The only thing thats keeping me from getting one right now is that I'm well acquainted with my TI83+ interface and I can't justify the the price of the 89 for something I don't need.

Go for the 89 titanium if you're going to do calculus. It's really not hard at all to use.

I used an TI-82 for parts of High school, then an 83+. Both were amazing. AFter getting to college i still used my 83+ untill it died on me. After wards, I went out and bought an 89TI. I used it for one Stats class but, its a really great investment.

I wish I had it for my Circuits/electronics class that used complex numbers in matrixes. My 83+ couldn't handle complex numbers in matrixes. Needless to say, i made some silly algebra mistakes trying to figure the stuff out by hand instead of writing it down and then pluggin it in to my calc.

I would say, buy as much calculator as you can afford right now. If you go with the 89TI editoin, you won't need another calculator for a while. And if the 89 can't do the job, use a computer for that specific problem.

Yes I have an 89 and an 84 because some teachers would not allow the 89 due to the fact that it does symbolic algebra for you. It is a great help and can do near any calculus function you need to do, but it does it for you. It doesn't show you the work and doesn't tell you how it got the answer. If you just put down the answer and do no work you wont get much if any credit for your answer. I would suggest getting the 84 because it will force you to learn to do the work, and you know for a fact that you can use it in all your classes.

I think I have a TI83,85, and 89. I have no idea which one I should be using for class. I assume the higher the number, the better.

Yeah, learning how how to do the work is key. The caclulator should be just a tool that helps you get the work done, not a Clutch.

So to supplement what I posted before, I also use a simple 4 function Calculator in addition to my TI-89Titanium Edition. If i'm doing serious number number crunching, etc, i use the 89, but for some basic math problems, the 4 function does the job just fine.

I used that simple 4-function calculator for a semester school after my 83+ died on me. It was simple, and did the job just nicely. The only reason why I upgrade was that the 4-function calculator didn't handle stats very well, and i need something that i could plug in statistical data for my exams.

89, because it's very helpful for calculus. The 83 is only better for the ACT, where the 89 isn't allowed.

89, hands down. You can use it to do just about anything, and it's easy to use, especially if you are not acustomed to other calculators. For some reason, TI-83/84 users find it terribly difficult to use an 89, but I thought the transition was easy and natural.
