Graphics occasionally screw up.

Occasionally this happens after I reboot my computer. I'd say 1 in 30 reboots or so, but it really doesn't have a pattern, it's just random and rare.

However, when it does happen, it's slightly annoying because I have to reboot my computer again, which fixes the problem. So it's easy to fix, but I'd like to know what's causing it so I can hopefully prevent it from happening again.

ASUS P4P800 Deluxe
P4 800fsb 2.8ghz
Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb
Corsair 1gig xms ram (3200 I believe. the fast stuff)
Audigy 2

Me and my friend both built our computers at the same time, and we basically built identical computers except he had a different mobo and a Radeon 9800 128mb. He also has this problem, so I am assuming it is a bug with our Radeon cards?

If you try different Radeon drivers what happens to the issue? I know you'll probably need 30 odd reboots to see if this makes a difference....

Are there any other graphics issues you get at all? Artefacts in games or anything like that?

I've upgrade to all the new Catalyst drivers as they've come out since last October, when I built this computer and first noticed the issue. Apparently over the months, no changes in graphics drivers has fixed it. And no, I've never had any graphical problems as far as I can remember.

I get this problem too with my 9700Pro. For me it is not a driver issue since the corruption happens even before Windows loads and only happens after a cold boot.

Mine is not restricted to reboots; it has happened with cold boots. But you brought up a very important point I neglected to mention. Mine happens one of two ways.

1. The graphics corruption occurs immediately after Windows loads, like in my screenshot.
2. The graphics corruption occurs on the Win XP loading screen, with the little green load bar. i.e., before Windows loads, like your problem.

The strange thing is, when #2 happens (corruption before Windows loads), the corruption is gone AFTER Windows finishes loading. IMO, that's very strange. Corruption on the load screen, but it's gone after Windows finishes loading.

Anyway, that #2 situation is rare. Usually it happens after Windows loads, like in my pic.

Can't see it being driver related then - have you checked with ATI at all?
