theres a couple of 6600GT's for decent prices, and i was looking at X800GTO's and X1600's but they all go over budget

im trying to get him as much graphics as possible, so more memory the better, more memory bandwidth the better. i have a feeling the XFX 6800 with its 256mb of ram is gonna be a good deal.

any other suggestions?

oh his monitor is 1280x1024

there are a few GT's under budget, but 128 bit 128mb 8 pipe vs 12 pipe 256mb 256bit (albiet slower mem) is gonna be faster and for the same price.

DDR and GDDR3 are totaly differnt GDDR3 is so much faster the DDR at same clock speed a x800 GTO/2 can be had for $180

6800 ~= 6600GT so the 6800 looks like the best deal there. X700 and 7300GS are quite subpar if I remember correctly.

i can find plenty of 6600GT's for good money but for some reason im just hesitant about recommending a 128mb card for some reason i just cant see it lasting

right X800GT it is

it was a draw between the 6800 from XFX, and this power color X800GT

the GT had 2x DVI ports which he said would be very useful, the card doesnt require any more power than what the PCI slot gives, which is good for his DELL,
