After going in circles for 2 hours I thought that I would ask you guys to save the day. After a botched game installation where I tried to reinstall graphics drivers, I have no picture, except in safe mode. In device manager the name of the graphics adapter is there, Matrox G550, but has a red X on it. I've gone thru many variations on the steps to try to update the driver, but I always get stopped at a screen that says that it can't find the file, even though I have the Matrox cd in the drive and I tell it to look there. I tried going thru Install New Hardware in control panel in safe mode (only way I can get there since I ain't got no picture otherwise) and it kindly tells me that I can't install new hardware in safe mode. I tried taking out the graphics card and starting, then turning off and starting again with the card, thinking that the pnp would see something new and want to install it. Tried going in thru display>advanced>adapter>change, in control panel, and I get to the same dead end.

Any ideas?

Try completely un-installing the drivers in safe mode and deleting the card in "device manager", then re-booting.

If this doesn't work, then while in safe mode, change your vidcard "standard vga adater" and see if you can then reboot at least into Windows. If you can get into Windows normally after that, then try reinstaling the Matrox driver.

Thanks boys, it worked. I can see again. When it rebooted it found both the monitor and the card as something new, and installed the drivers that were already in there somewhere. It's funny why it can't reistall drivers from device manager, without taking it out and putting it back in. I'm glad my doctor doesn't use that method when I go to see him.

BTW I'm the same person.

Yeah, thank god you wouldn't have to uninstall/re-install your liver or something to get it working again.
