Lets say I wanted to get a taste of what it would be like to program in OpenGL for example.... how would I go about it? I don't have any windows programming experience, most of my experience is your command line Java, C/C++ etc. I'd probably rather develop in a Linux/Unix/OS X environment if it doesn't make it infinitely harder to get started. I know I'll need to learn some sort of GUI programming to help with this too...

If anyone could point me in the direction of a community for this sort of stuff, or some webpages with some tutorials that would be wonderful.

(I assume the hardware you haev barely matters if you just want to mess around?)

Thanks,

Dave

Yah, I'm in the same boat as you. I'm a poor Computer Science student but I want to be a video game programmer. I'll be learning on my own unfortunately since my school doesn't specialize in the field. So I'll be getting some books in my spare time.

Recently, I've been enlightened with a barage of infos and I've decided that I want to be the cool guy that does the graphics part of a game engine. That seems more interesting to me than programming the AI, audio, or networking part.

I used to have no clue on where to get started but the articles below really opened my eyes. So, I decided I'll study Opengl API first then may be DirectX later on. Perhaps, I can create some cool looking graphics demo and present it to some video game company and they'll be some impressed that they'll hire me on the spot as the lead graphics programmer with a salary of $200,000.

Here's an awesome article about the process in creating the engine in video games

Here's a tiny article about the video game industry that you might find exciting.
