The amount of minor irritations that I've had with my ATI HD 5770 is making me wonder whether the grass is greener on the other side.
Since I built mine in Apr 2010:
1 - Not OS specific, but the default fan noise from my graphics card was quite loud with an otherwise very quiet system. I worked around this with MSI AfterBurner (IIRC thanks for someone on this forum recommending it).
2 - StarCraft 2: occasional graphics corruptions, sometimes I'd get a very artistic and colourful graffiti painted landscape. It certainly added a bit of variation to the game. Also, when the new achievement notifications appeared, the shimmer effect was badly screwed up. Both fixed with different driver updates. CCC is on default settings.
3 - WMP playing back too many WMV files in a row would occasionally cause graphics corruptions which would then affect other applications like blacking out of all the menu options. On one or two occasions the system hung. I tried uninstalling AMD's video transcoding stuff / hardware accelerations, no difference. Fixed with a driver update I think, I haven't seen this one for a while.
4 - When I'm watching YouTube clips in Firefox, if a video is playing and I scroll up/down, the interface for manipulating the video playback gets corrupted (sometimes a portion of a video frame fills that area, or it goes black). This is a current one.
5 - Flash clip playback isn't as smooth when desktop composition is enabled (not browser specific). The best example of this is Robot Unicorn Attack. With desktop composition enabled, it stutters a huge amount (glass doesn't make a difference). With it disabled, it's manageable but not perfect. I've seen it a lot smoother even on Intel integrated graphics. I don't really want to lose Aero as I like the translucent UI because I think it helps draw my attention to app content rather than the taskbar/title bars of Windows.
My PC spec
In the previous ten years of using nvidia cards, I can remember a couple of much more minor graphics corruptions but certainly not in 2D. That was all on WinXP (with a small stint of using Vista) though.
Everyone's impression of what's minor and/or annoying is different, so some of the things I've described may not bother other people, or they might be throwing the graphics card in the bin while I'm inclined to keep using it until I want/need something significantly better, but I expect better when I've paid ~£130 for a graphics card.
I guess what I'd like to know is whether people have similar issues with their AMD/NV graphics card or none at all. If anyone has any suggestions that might fix the current problems I'm having (4 and 5), I'd like to hear them.
