graphics cards now costing more than cpus

Think about it:

- GPU's have surpassed CPU's in transistor count
- Graphics cards require a complicated PCB
- Graphics cards require 128+ MB of very, very high speed memory

Graphics cards SHOULD cost more than CPUs.

Viper GTS

i think we need to define off topic and moronic, and then define each post as one or the other

and yes, it makes sense, they have more transistors and expensive ram on it

Wouldn't it be wiser just to buy a Gaming Console that costs the same as one of those Graphic Cards?

Interesting... buy xbox, and then remove the graphics card to install in your computer.... ha ha

but seriously, perhaps good graphics cards are overpriced.

My sentiments exactly. I want to separate my 'work' from my 'play'--so playing games on my computer is out. But that's my personal decision... and if someone wants to spend their money on a $400 graphics card--go for it. 🙂

As far as the original topic--they're really really expensive beasts to make--especially the high-end ones. Now note that you CAN buy VERY cheap graphics cards with decent performance--look at the R9000Pro. Its not the best, but it'll let you do a LOT of what you'd like to do (you might be forced to game at 800x600 instead of 1280x1024).

but you need an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro super mega duplexing 1 gig of ram video card to use Microsoft Word and check your email 🙂

Nope, the fastest desktop P4 (3.06 GHz) = $565, Athlon XP 3000+ = $571. Even a Dustbuster XL costs less. What is ironic is AMD costing more than intel at 3 GHz / "3000+" (newegg prices).

One reason why I stopped using my computer for gaming was it was getting too expensive to upgrade...with the console you at least get a couple of years out of it, and now that you can go online with them and they have features like voice chat it has pretty much eliminated my need for a gaming PC

Expensive to upgrade? 8 months ago I bought an ATI 8500 for $100. Sold my geforce 2 for $40. Ended up costing me $60 to upgrade. I can play any game on the market. Now if I wanted 567 frames per second or to play at 1600X1200 with 8XAA I am out of luck.

rudder, you are right on. The time where computers evolved so quick that you have to buy a new one every 6 month is WAY OVER. I have a AMD system with an 8500 DVI for over a year now... runs fine and does a great job!
