Graphics Card to display picture on TV

I'm using a S Video cable to transfer the picture from my computer to a tv, but the audio only works on the pc's speakers. How do I get the sound to work from the tv???

Thanks.

basically you cannot. TV receives sound through coax or RCA only. If your video comes through s-video, then thats the channel the TV is going to worry about and even if you put the sound through other means then it wont matter.

If your TV accepts "line in" then you can hook up your audio port to it. Otherwise you will have settle for sound to your stereo or PC speakers...

The SVideo cable does not carry any audio signal. You need a separate audio cable, from the PC Line-Out into the TV audio-in.

Gotcha. So I can run a line from the speaker out from the computer to the tv's audio system line-in. I dont think the tv has a line in, but i'm pretty sure the system (receiver) connected to it does...

Does anyone know how long the audio line can be??? The tv is about 30 ft away (along the perimeter) from the computer.

Thanks

30 feet will work fine.

(or whatever brand of cables you want to get from wherever)

Not that you'll only get stereo sound or you can apply things like Prologic II or whatever your receiver has to fake surround out of it if you have a surround set.

There are some ways of getting true surround if that's what you're trying to do.

Thanks!

Are the items linked the most common/practical way to do this? (sorry, not trying to be complicated, just curious)

Nothing special with this setup. My parents like to watch streaming international tv and for xmas, I put a graphic card w/ S video out for them to watch on their tv. Now I'm just trying to get sound from the tv.

Thanks everyone.

Yeah, this is the common way to do this. I linked you to an adapter and then a pair of regular RCA cables. You can also get it as one cable with 1/8" stereo on one end and two RCA on the other end as a connection, but it might be harder to find the right length you want and I think the adapter + standard cable method gives you more options down the road for if you want to use the cables for another purpose.

Besides this method, there are a couple others.

If both the computer and receiver have digital connections, you could use a digital connection (digital coaxial or digital optical) to make the link. This would get you stereo for things like music and games (and you could still use surround effects like PLII and such to fake surround). For things that are pre-encoded with DD or DTS, you could do passthrough of those signals and if your receiver can decode DD or DTS, you could get true surround.

If your receiver has a 5.1 analog input on it, you could get three sets of the cables/adapters I mentioned earlier and you could get surround from games and movies. There's more info on that in that linked thread.
