I'm planning for the worst at the moment (ie. getting my 750Ti RMA'd is proving problematic), basically considering my options.

My budget is an absolute maximum of £200 UKP. If you want to browse prices on a site I'm likely to use, then try www.cclonline.com.

I game at 1080p. I typically go for high detail settings but low AA/AF (eg. 2x or less), in order to try and get a smooth frame rate that is reasonably high (eg. 40-60FPS).

System spec:

Intel Core i5-4690K stock
ASUS Z97 PRO GAMER
12GB DDR3
Win7 64 SP1
boot SSD
Corsair VX450W (definitely has a spare 6-pin PCIE connector, not sure about 8-pin).

I'm making do with a Radeon HD 6670 but I've dropped SC2's graphics settings to get a smooth framerate which isn't ideal (I've clocked a lot of hours on SC2, 750ti handled it fine with high settings). Otherwise I've played plenty of XCOM EU/EW which the 6670 can handle fine. My wife wants me to play XCOM 2 but even on low detail settings this game is painful to play (eg. 15-20FPS I'd say). Historically I've played Deadpool (fine on 6670) and Batman AA/AC (on 750Ti, fine on DX9). I can't think of any other games I have or currently play that are remotely demanding.

XCOM 2 is probably the only game I've got to go on as a yardstick but I can't find any useful benchmarks for it. The impression I've got is that 2K is working on this game post-release because of bad performance experiences.

Based on AT and TR's reviews I was fairly set on aiming for a 960 4GB as the conclusions of these reviews suggested that AMD's alternatives were more expensive without offering anything significant in exchange. I had my eye on a Gigabyte 960 4GB 'Windforce' card that was about £165 IIRC. However, techpowerup seems to think that the R9 380/X is significantly better generally (but it also uses a lot more power).

PS - I doubt I'm going to play at >1080p in the foreseeable future. I also say absolutely no to lower resolutions than 1080p.

PPS - I would prefer to get a higher performance card, but I am also interested in power efficiency and a low-noise solution. I upgraded from my 5770 to a 750Ti partly because the former would hit 5000RPM during pretty much any remotely demanding game. On the flipside I'm worried that the 960 is a short-sighted choice.

After-market 380s are a better choice in the price range of 960s. Better DX12 perf from what we've seen and better DX11 perf as well.

By 'after-market' do you mean second-hand?

I'm pretty sure he means the cooler. Rather than the boxy blower, the ones with multiple open fans blowing straight onto the card. Often come with a factory overclock and a bunch more headroom.

Agree with the 380x recommendation, it soundly beats the 960 and will certainly serve you well. I was in a similar position to you a few months back and ended up getting a used Sapphire Tri-X 290 off ebay for £200. There is a risk with buying secondhand cards that you may not be comfortable with but the 290 is a truly great performer. I don't consider it overkill for 1080p with Virtual Super Resolution enabled, once you've had a taste of that you'll never want to go back.

That ancient PSU only has 1x6pin.

I assume you recycled this from an old Core 2 build long before your Haswell CPU.

I'd suggest replacing that 2007 PSU that isn't even Bronze with a modern 550W or higher with a 80+ Bronze with at least 2x6+2pin connectors. Unfortunately as it stands now you are limited in selection to the GTX 960 4GB being your best choice regardless of price since it is the fastest card with 1x6pin.
