Graphics Card Performance

I currently have a nVidia GeForce 5700 Ultra AGP graphics card. I am planning a massive upgrade of the system and the last thing in my list to buy is a graphics card. I am trying to stay at a pretty low budget and still be able to play games maxed out at a 1280x1024 Res. on my 19" NEC 90GX2. I was curious how the performace of say a 7600GT would compare to the performance of the 5700 Ultra. If I won't notice much of a difference I know I would notice if I went with a eVGA 7900GS KO. I really would prefer nVidia and I am also looking for a cool and quite card as I am overclocking my new system-->(C2D E6300, GA-965P-DS3, and 2GB Crucial DDR2-1000 (PC2-8000), Thermaltake Big Typhoon, and an Antec Neo HE 550 all in a Thermaltake Aguila Case). I want to go with a lower priced card cause I plan to go dx10 when there is a 2nd refresh and don't want to spend a lot of money on this card currently.

Anything out there is at least 5 times faster than that card... dont worry about getting the 7600 GT

A 7600GT is good for 1024x768 med or med to high settiings in newer/intensive games like Oblivion, GRAW etc, don't expect as much in Rainbow Six Vegas or DA.

i didn't see your budget for a video card

and you won't get *maxed* with a 7600GT at 10x12 -- even though it is many [many] times faster than your old card

what games do you play and expect to play?

if you are a gamer, don't skimp on the GPU ;)

save a little more ... wait a little longer .... or just get a cheapie with a view to upgrading the video later ... lots of ways to go ... don't worry about DX10 ... won't see full DX10 games for a couple of years.

and you just might consider ATi ... they are cheaper for the same performance in the midrange [sometimes] ... ATi's drivers have equaled nvidia -- long since you bought your last video card.

No dont.

ANyway, 7600GT is around 10~20% faster than a 6800ultra. A 6800ultra was 3 times as fast as a 5900ultra. So basically its around 4~5 times faster than your 5700ultra.

Not to mention a 7900GS should be even more faster. You will able to use AA/AF in your games.

A 7600GT is on par with 6800-level hardware. The 6800 smoked the 59xx series by a huge margin, let alone a lowly 5700.

I dunno - I play older games and recently jumped up from my ti4200 to the 7600GT and now i'm getting frame rates in the hundreds....DOTA is as smooth as ever ;)

In all seriousness the hardest I pushed it was using Serious Sam 2 that came with my card and I got it beautiful on max settings with every slight a lag. I turned off bloom and then everything was silky smooth -- and everything looked BETTER might I add [same thing withi AOE3 although I don't get lag with that game...whoever really thinks bloom makes a game look better needs to be shot]

Well I play Battlefield 2, Counter-Strike: Source and 1.6(graphics no problem here), DoD:S, Half-Life 2 Series, NFS: Most Wanted, NFS:Carbon, and I want to get the new Hitman (the 5700 isn't supported at all D:). I play all these games at 1280x1024 with all eye-candy off to get good frame rates.

STFU. Stop trying to sound as if you know what the Hell you're talking about, akshayt.

If you wanna play 12x10 with high/max settings I'd recommend the 7900gs at least. I play on a 19" LCD with a 7600gt and on newer games I have to lower most of the settings to medium for playable framerates. The 7900gs is a great overclocker and low power consumer too, most of em seem to get 20-25% on core.

Tom's Hardware comparision tool might be useful as someone else mentioned.

You might also keep an eye peeled on the Hot Deals forum here. I got my pci-e 7900GS for under $130 a couple months ago to replace my AGP X850XT. I only wanted a card at least as fast as the AGP card and got one a bit faster. These keep going on sale at various places so you might want to start checking that forum. ;)

I hemmed and hawed over the same 7600GT vs 7900 GS for my new Biostar T-Force 6100 socket 939 board and Athlon 64 3700. I wound up with this one, in the hope that it would also be servicable for the next upgrade. I figured for an extra $30 or so after rebate, the double the memory bandwidth should be worth it. I will probably be CPU limited, too, so at least it shouldn't be the graphics card holding me back. I just hope my 430W Thermaltake power supply will be sufficient.

I think I am gonna go with the eVGA 7900GS KO. Lifetime Warranty is what got me. Plus its the best card in my price range with really good overclocking is nice too...whether I will do that or not remains to be seen just because I don't know if that will void my eVGA warranty. No Volt Modding I will just be using coolbits.

Looks like you've thought it through & decided on your priorities... and come to a good decision :) Enjoy your graphics upgrade!
