Now let me get this right, UT2003 is based on the new Unreal engine. With that in mind, while it is very colorful, it looks flat to me. Maybe I just dont know enough about the engines to comment.

Hard to compare with the two screenies you provided.

The Doom 3 screen you used was of an indoor shot, and the UT2003 screen was of an outdoor shot which are much more difficult to render.

Both look promising to me.

i think the new doom III engine is better. For one to me it looks more realistic.

Color wise, UT2003 looks to be very "fruity." But by looking at the character models, enviroments, and detailing, Doom III looks much better IMHO. UT has a bad case of the "blocky character models" with big legs/feet/arms etc. Doom III just looks more life-like and more believable.

According to the Unreal II website you should be able to run the game with a P3 600 and a Geforce SDR
noway are you going to be able to do that with doom so i'd say doom has better graphics

Those screenies for UT2k3 are bad examples it seems to me, i have seen better pics. no biggy tho

I just really dont like the Doom 3 engine i mean its nice but everything looks too... i dont know how to put it, it looks like those not cheesy but not well done pre-renders. They are all glossy and seem like cutouts.

Bleh I just cant put my opinion on paper for this ;)

OMG! The face on that first UT screen looks friggan retarded! Is that a man or a woman? The second one looks much better. Anyway, I have to say that Doom 3 is sh!t loads better when it comes to realism than UT.

Doom3>Unreal Engine

The new engine wasn't built from scratch, but is a huge extension of the original engine (IIRC). The Doom 3 engine is from scratch, and should outclass it. It comes out far later than the Unreal Engine so should have more polish to it. Plus it's got Carmack ;)

What I'd like to know is this.

Look at Q3A, then look at games like MOH and SOF2. Wonder what Doom based games will look like 2 years after it's out :D

Both are dang fine engines and should pump out some great games.

I'm hugely pumped about Raven Shield (Rainbow 6 III). New vid up at VoodooExtreme, nearly creamed my pants. So many cool features.

id has never done very well with outdoor/large area maps IMHO, and that was an area where UT excelled. id also had some pretty crappy coloring as well. But, I think that is more largely a limitation of id's level design and artists instead of engine limitation.

I far prefer outdoor maps, and I'm going to give my nod to UT.

I would have to guess that the Doom 3 engine is the better one, graphically. From what I've heard, it is much more of a sytem-taxing engine. If it runs so much better on the better equipment, it makes me think it will generate the prettier graphics. From those screens, though, it doesn't look like the UT engine will be a slouch, though.

guys, UT2003 and Unreal II are simply using updated versions of the original Unreal engine....

The next real leap from the guys at Epic is the so-called Unreal Warfare engine, which will be on par with the Doom III engine...

maybe we will actually get to see Duke Nukem Forever on that engine....

Doom 3 has superb lighting! And Unreal II looks flat is because it doesn't use bump-mapping(?)

I am really looking forward to the new Unreal games (it's a great engine...even UT still stands up as a great game), but let's face it...Doom3 is going to smoke it technology wise. Absolutely destroy it. :)

DOOM 3 SUCKS!

Now that I have your attention. :D

The DOOM 3 engine will have more realistic texturing and lighting....
The UT03(that's how we refer to it from now on, got it? :)) engine will be able to run on lower end systems....

Guess what? You can sell more games by having a less demanding engine.
Hopefully, when DOOM ]|[ comes out, it will cause a frenzy of upgrading so more people can run it(finally a PC game you can show to your family members who think the XBOX is the shizzit)....

But, sadly, probably 60 percent of the PC's being used right now have good ol' integrated graphics<-----the devil

yep. UT's outdoor levels ran good only because they were composed of huge, flat polygons. That engine starts to lag bad after 800 polys on screen I believe.

First of all you are comparing the wrong games. You should be comparing Unreal2 to Doom3, not UT2 to Doom3, as UT is natrually made for speed since its a multiplayer game and not a single player game. That being said, Of course Doom3 looks better, its still about 1.5-2 years away, where as Unreal2 will be released this year. Who knows what the Unreal engine will look like in 2 years?

I like Carmack alot, he's a programming god... but he really needs to get out of satans temple for a day... open the fvckin door and go plant a tree, learn what green looks like... not brown corridors.

Unreal 2 has my vote for variable environments, Doom 3 will prolly run in amazing FPS though...

Unreal 2 can kiss my @$$ for not having COOP mode in it this time though too

The average counterstrike map has around 500-1000 world poly's on screen at the laggiest spots. Some of the better looking UT maps had several thousand on screen. I believe Epic has been claiming polygon counts an order of magnitude higher in UT2. I'll bet the best looking UT2003 maps might peak around 100-120,000 polys.

It doesn't look like you're giving Epic enough credit.

Not to rain on anybody's parade, but won't there be a year or more between the release of these respective games?

Edit: What DOACleric said. :)

You're comparing the wrong engines. The Unreal engine as it stands for Ut2k3 and u2 is not meant to compete with doom 3, it can't. It does look better in some ways (outdoors, etc) but the doom3 engine is far superior in capacity and effects.

What you want to be comparing is the doom 3 engine with the Unreal Warfare engine, which will definatly give Doom 3 a run for its money, seeing as the current engine does hold its own against doom 3.

Both Doom 3 and Unreal "warfare" will be out around the same time, which is mid-late 2003.

Comparing Current Unreal Tech to doom 3 tech is somewhat like comparing the half life engine with quake 3 (albeit less-so in this case), they can both create decent looking stuff but the quake 3 is still going to blow whatever the HL engine can do out of the water. Of course this is not taking into account some of the other features of the two engines, which as I said makes Unreal as it stands able to compete with doom 3.

Wait until next year when we see hard facts and media of the UW engine, I think it will be giving doom 3 a run for its money.

But if we must compare, I would say that the Unreal engine is inferior, yet it will appear superior due to the user support, the artists behind the games and the experience the developers have, and of course the outdoor stuff.

"Unreal 2 can kiss my @$$ for not having COOP mode in it this time though too "

Why don't more games support COOP play? The best time I've ever had playing a video game was Twisted Metal 2 on the playstation. That had COOP play, and I wasted countless holiday weekends with my brother playing that game. And I don't really consider deathmatch or team based capture the flag COOP play. It's not the same as having a story unfold.
