I have a scanned letter head that is pretty grainy. I need to cut the logo off of it and digitize it for another image. Is there any type of freeware that can do this, or is Illustrator my best bet? Any tutorials so I can do it myself? What is the correct terminology for this process? I have been searching Google for a few minutes with no luck.

Inkscape is a free vector art program I've used several times. I don't know if it would have a trace tool like Illustrator, though. I've heard Adobe has a separate program for vectorizing stuff called Streamline. That might be worth looking into as well. I generally just hear people call it vector tracing, vectorize, or just vector used as a verb.

fwiw streamline has been integrated into illustrator...the last version of streamline that was a separeat program was some time ago....it's now called autotrace or livetrace, depending on your version.
