I'd appreciate your opinion on why Mac's are so popular in the field of graphics. From what I've been reading, a PC is just as capable as a Mac for graphic intensive purposes.

Is there something that a G4 does that blows away an equally priced PC?

I'm asking your advice because I'm ready to shell out a fair bit of cash for a new computer and like most people want to get the best for my money.

Thanks

I myself have used both Mac and PC for graphics. I know people that will stand by their MAC being superior in creating graphics. From what i understand, they prefer the Mac because of its speed in processing the graphics, which I agree (Photoshop at least). Another reason is that Mac was first for graphics when the PC was still trying to catch up. BUT understand that the cost of a G4 would get you almost TW0 top of the line PC :)
I for one hate that hockey puck for a mouse so i prefer the PC. Also, theres seem to be less 3d graphics programs for the Mac.

If you don't do anything else on the computer but 2d graphics, the Mac is great. Then again, theres the fun of building a PC yourself from scratch...and all the 3d apps to choose from.

Mac have almost no hardware config problems(true PnP for years. PC however, is plagued by the compatiblity problems with various applications.

I am a graphic designer and I have to say( having used both ) that a PC is just as good as a MAC. The reason MAC users are so loyal is because 5 or 6 years ago a PC coudn't do anykind of graphics on the level of a MAC. They simply do see that a PC can do it just as good, or better, for 1/3 the price.

Reasons I prefer PC:
RAM allocation problems in MACs are a big issue. Not being able to work with more than one big program( say Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand......) open and still be able to surf the web and other things while you work. I'm not saying MACs can't do that I'm just saying they have problems doing it.

1/3 the price!! I mean get real, why would I wanna spend $3000 when I get the same bang for $1000.

Upgrading: I like to do it myslef...:)

Anyway...............

if I get this job at a local photoshop I'll tell you if G4's are worth it;)

But there really isn't that much of a speed difference in 2d editors compared to the PC.

I use a PC and a Mac G4 at work. Depending on what i am doing i will use the Mac on occasion over the PC. But whenever i can use the PC(which is about 90% of the time)I gladly sit down in front of it. When it comes to large format printing with multiple layers you can't beat the Mac's speed in Photoshop or Illustrater. Smaller files always get handled in the pc because its more forgiving and less of a pain.

I will never personally own a Mac, PC all the way for me. In some areas though(not alot of them) the Mac is better and crashes less.
