Hi, not sure which forum to post this.

Someone gave my elderly neighbor a Pavillion 6465 P-3 desktop w/o a hard drive.
Told her I'd try to find what kind & how much for replacement.

It's got Celeron 433 MHz.

Found very few HDD tech specs searching HP's site, but found on Drive Solutions the exact model: http://www.drivesolutions.com/...itemid&itemid=hpdt1137
says the orig HDD was 9.6 GB EIDE 5400 rpm. Says the model has 2 IDE connectors.

Question 1: what is max size HDD this pc is likely to support?
The upgrade HDDs Drive Solutions shows are mostly ATA100, either 5400 / 7200 rpm (same link as above).

2) Given HDD size limitations of the pc, what is likely cheapest size / type commonly available for it now? Will just a "standard" ATA 100 (of what ever size) work?

3) Would an EIDE Ultra ATA 100/133 work, within size limitations?

Thanks.

Well, I can't really answer anything definatively except for #3, HDD connections are just like memory speeds, they'll clock down if the motherboard can't handle the full speed.

The size is probably limited by the OS to 137gb, any of the ATA 7200rpms should work. You can get a 40gig at newegg for $38

If the HP specs are right, it says that thing has a 440zx chipset. While that chipset itself can support drives to 120 gig, the bios will not. At best it will support a 40 gig drive, though I think a 20 gig is the more safe bet.

On another note, how many other forums is this question posted on? Google shows at least two others with the same wording in the question about that model Pavilion.

137GB would be the partiton size, not the drive size

There would still be a limit imposed by the BIOS and hardware due to things like the LBA size. At the very most it will be limited to a 120GB HD, but as redbeard1 says it's likely more limited than that.
