I commuted 35 miles to college every day.....

Hardly any student loans + engineering degree, worked out pretty good for me. Straight cash homey.

Personally, I kind of like the little mazda-2/fiesta etc cars.

But they aren't that much less expensive, feel 'cheap' for the most part, and don't get better mileage than the compact-class cars.

Another vote for current-gen Hyundai Elantra, if you can find the right price.

But most of the cars in that class get great mileage, are well-made, and probably are safer than a Mazda-2 for side-impact.

Having driven an elantra I can't recommend it. I don't know why it gets so much attention but its just not a good car. Terrible visibility, handles poorly, and in general very 'meh'

BTW what does gold tassels mean? Magna Cum Laude?

If she's that smart, she might want to consider getting to a university as soon as possible. I don't know anyone who has gone to CC first and then gone to one of the better public universities. They seem to end up at the lesser ones.

When I was in HS tassel color meant cumulative GPA. I believe gold signified above 3.75. Of course, its been a few years since I was in hs 😉

Top 3 on her class. She had the scholarships if she wants. Prefers at this time the local CC.
Brother is on full at American in DC.

If she's that great of a student, give her the opportunity to go to a university and don't have her wasting time at a CC. Community college is a joke.

I would use that money to get her into a university. She'll thank you later.

Everyone's responses here amaze me how much they want the kid to live in a dorm, with no car, just sit there. I lived in the dorms, and had a car! How else do you get a job? I guess you guys might be used to your city transit, but please realize that's really small areas. Most places bus routes won't start until 7:30AM, end at around 8PM and they only service right in the immediate campus area. I remember how many times people wanted to bum rides at school just because they couldn't get to the taco bell. Give the girl a life for goodness sake.

Oh and school housing, most places start at 2500-3500 per semester, easily 10,000 a year. You've got to burn *alot* of gas to make up the difference, approximately 40,000 miles per year at 5$ a gallon.

University cost per credit hour is a joke. Went to CC for about 1 year (summer, fall, spring, summer) before going to university in fall. I had offers from Georgia Southwestern State Univerity and University of Georgia (UGA). Chose GSW because me and my brother personally study under Dr. Boris Peltsverger and Dr. Alexander Yemelyanov, both of whom are on the Who's Who in Education and Who's Who in America and Who's Who International Edition lists. Unlike other colleges where you just study under a teachers aid, we got the real deal.

Sometimes a school is nothing but a name.

EDIT: Oh yeah, what I actually did at the CC was just take the basic stuff that the american university system rapes your wallet with. 2 history classes, 2 labs, pre-cal, health, blah blah blah. I paid something like 38$ an hour (with a cap at 12, so my 15/17 hours loads had some freeby thrown in) which is far better than the 100somthing $ an hour costs at universities. It makes no sense to spend all that cash at a university for something that's not even in your major.

Also, my commute was 38 miles, one way. Sure some days it sucked, but it really wasn't an issue. Just good music plugged into the radio, pandora/grooveshark streaming that sort of thing.

Do you guys have the Hyundai i30 over there?

I wouldn't buy one for myself... but it's actually pretty good quality quality & safe. Plus the little turbo diesels are a very nice engine.

This. I know a number of my classmates went to CC for two years to rack up credits, then transferred to Cooper for the second two years, saved a lot of money on housing costs and got the same degree. Most of them were very smart too.
