Grammar Nazis needed please.

If I understand correctly, usage of the term "common sense" and "commonsense" would be as follows:

"He has a commonsense approach."

<or>

"He has a lot of common sense."

Is this correct?

I think so. The first sentence is using it as an adjective and the second sentence is using it as a noun.

Thanks. I was basically 95% sure that this was correct, but I don't remember why.
