he is being a tool, but he used to be an english teacher, and besides, he's dead right. plus, the person corresponding with him from coca cola is a complete idiot: "words with suffixes don't appear in the dictionary." made up words, perhaps.

He has a point witht he word "everyday," but, who the hell cares if someone used a word that is not in the dictionary in an email?

Impactful might not be standard usage, but it appears in a ton of pages on Google.

Haha, I actually got a kick out of that!

I think Rich is being a bit anal and I'm wondering if he's just feeling a bit bored or unappreciated in his world. Who knows, but he does have a point :) The English language is getting ripped to shreds these days (especailly by mean :p)

Wheres the rest of the emails? Something tells me that thats not all of it.

well, it turns out that impactul is indeed a word. merriam webster unabridged

the guy was definitely being a tool but i still thought it was pretty damn funny.

my favorite:
I believe that if you research this further you will find that many words with suffixes are in fact in the dictionary, and that words that are not words are not.

first, that's how we define whether words are legitimate or not. if they're not in a dictionary, then they're not real words. second, the coke person was trying to insult him, and came off appearing even more stupid. i'd imagine that english teachers especially would care if people start using words that aren't in dictionaries. (btw, of course words can be added to dictionaries over time, but hopefully not because of dumbass marketing execs.)

Would the number of pages that appear on Google on sayyyyy..... White Supremecy be afforded the same level of credibility? If not why not , since your qualifing criteria is "Appearing on a number of pages on Google"? The common usage and ACCEPTANCE of "dumbed down" language is disgraceful. It is the epitome of sophistry. The English language is NOT THAT difficult to learn to use correctly. To hear such simpering from such a crowd of obviously intelligent people is shocking. Would you have the same cavalier attitude for someone who refused to learn basic HTML rules / protocol, yet proclaimed himself a web page DESIGNER ??? I find your duplicity only mildly amusing. For the most part, it's pathetic. Free English lesson for your ENTIRE SCHOOL LIFE and you wasted it. As for me, I regret not learning Spanish with the same level of competence I posses with English.

I I EVEN TRIED using the M/W Dictionary instead of The Oxford English Dictionary, I got the "Standards are Rules and Rules are Important" Speech.
If the accuracy of what you are saying isn't that important to you. just go ahead and make up any old thing and say it. We'll regress systematically that way.... De-Evo is right.... :D
Sooner or later it all ends up as grunts, i guess.

Yeah, it isn't really smart to throw stones in a glass house. Might want to do some spell-checking on your post. Regardless, the fact remains that impactful is in fact a word, but not used in standard every day speech by most people.
