Need some help with an essay, and right now I've lsot most of my sanity. Which is correct?

1. I was in the warzone, helping whomever I could.
2. I was in the warzone, helping whoever I could.

RESOLVED: The majority has picked #1, and I'm going with that. Thanks a lot for the input and explanation.

Whom is a direct object. As in "I can frag whomever I want as a marine in AVP2 with my 1337 pulse rifle skills."

"Who" is a subject, as in "Whoever frags people as soon as they spawn is going to get booted from this server."
