Grainy Picture watching DirecTV on my new LCD TV!

I bought a Dell 19 inch LCD TV. It has a great picture with DVDs through any input, even composite. But, when I have it on satellite, the picture is terrible. Both other TVs I have in the house have a great picture (CRTs). But, this LCD has a terrible, grainy picture. Dell tech support typically blames it on the input and didn't listen to me when I told them that all 3 TVs are on the same input. When I called DirecTV tech support, they were at least helpful and pointed me in the right direction. He said he thinks the TV is trying to display the picture at too high of a resolution (720p). But, the satellite picture can only be displayed in (480i). I don't think the TV is automatically detecting that and I have searched the settings for a place to change it. Anyone have any experience with this? Satellite is what I wanted to mostly use the TV for in my office. There is no point in keeping it if I can't get it to work right. Thanks!!

A few more details on the TV. What is its native resolution? Is it HD? Are you trying to tune into HD channels or just analog channel?

Thanks for the reply. The native resolution is 1280 X 768. It is an HD-Ready TV. The channels I'm trying to watch are just regular channels on the satellite. They are suppose to all be digital quality. But, right now the picture is less quality than local air broacast channels. The tech from DirecTV asked me if there was a way to lower the resolution to 480i. I have not been able to find anything. Would that be necessary? I figured the TV would automatically adjust.

Are you using a HD reciever? You might be able to change the output there. How are you connected to the tv? Is it a 16:9 tv? if so you might need to have the reciever set to this. If its a 16:9 tv, you also might be stretching the picture.

Also the locals OTA will be better than the ones you get from satellite, for they are not compressed.

No, just regular satellite. The TV is 16:9. I've tried both 4:3 and 16:9 on the satellite reciever. Same picture.

Analog signals (aka 480i) do not always look the best on TVs with a 768 vertical resolution since it has to interpolate the resolution. Are you sure the TV is not 1280x720? That is one of the standard 16x9 resolutions (together with 1920x1080 and other lower resolutions). If you can tune into an HD channel you should see a dramatic improvement in PQ.
