I used to spend a lot of time on this site, built a lot of great gaming rigs with help from this community. My son is graduating this year and I want to send him to college with a nice laptop. He is a gamer. What's good these days? Something that will game good, take a college beating and make him happy. Thanks for the help.

Asus makes some viable ones starting at $600. Look on Newegg, sometimes they're on sale.

Probably look for one with a GTX 1650 or 1660 (*maybe ti or Super), Whiskey Lake 4C/8T or 6C/6T 'H' CPU.

I am looking max $ around 1000/1500. What would you look at in that price range? Or is just best to go cheaper? I prefer to save $ but I want to get him a nice laptop, something to replace his desktop. Thanks for the help.

Plenty of i7 6 core/12 thread +2070/2070 max-q show up for $1300-1400.

Similar laptops with 2060/2060 max q are typically around $1100 on sale, and 1660 ti/max q can be had for $800-900

The max-q variants run at lower clocks to hit the more efficient part of the performance curve. So If you're looking for a more balanced laptop, i.e. slightly quieter/cooler or thinner laptop and not just raw performance, pick one of those.
The dell g series is nice if you want a more subdued/normal looking laptop.

If you look around the next few weeks through black friday/cyber monday there should be a bunch of them.
