Grad School, and yes I've taken a position.
Lucky to be in a field that's white hot and recession resistant.

The job market is definitely a little more competitive, but an engineering degree will still open doors in this economy.
More like "being highly educated will still open doors in this economy". Anything that requires a difficult bachelors (applied sciences, i.e. chemistry, engineering, etc.) or a postgraduate degree (Masters and up) is a good bet, because those skill positions are rarely overcrowded, and it's not like companies can just hire GED scabs...
Unfortunately, a lot of people still don't realize that college degrees aren't rare these days and even with one, the job hunt can still be very tough (especially in bullshit cop out majors like communications or political science).
Hence why going the extra step is worth the time and money. High level return on investment for those extra 2+ years of tuition.

Unpaid internship is another word for legal slavery.
Yes it is, but it's also a damn good way to get your foot in the door somewhere. I took a position where I had interned. The company knew what they were getting (I had, after all, worked for them for free for 4 months, which is better than any interview), and I knew what I was getting as a work environment and co-workers. Everyone won.
