A small Canadian university has sparked controversy with its recruitment drive by using posters and a website mocking US President George W Bush.

Lakehead University in northern Ontario set up www.yaleshmale.com in a bid to attract potential new students.

It shows a picture of Yale graduate Mr Bush with the caption: "Graduating from an Ivy League university doesn't necessarily mean you're smart."

The president of Lakehead's student union called the campaign "repugnant".

The university has issued posters bearing the black and white image of Mr Bush, who graduated from Yale in 1968, encouraging people to visit its campaign website.

Once there, users are invited to click on a link if they agree with the caption, and are taken through to a page promoting Lakehead, which is based in Thunder Bay and has 7,600 students.

"Graduating from an Ivy League university doesn't necessarily mean you're smart."

The single word Legacy basically proves this true.

Politicians generally don't get where they are because of pure intellect, it has more to do with knowing the right people and pulling strings. The same idea goes for life in general. In that sense Yale is a great school because you can get to know a lot of influential people.

I see. I have to admit I'm surprised at St. Mary's progress, and I also wondered why U of T isn't listed. Now it makes sense.

But it is probably more likely that you are smart, and also more likely that you are rich.

^ That is the list for the "medical doctoral" category which includes the ones you described.

And here's the "comprehensive" category:

Lakehead is an atrociously bad university, and this sort of unclassy behaviour is right up their alley.

Incidentally, more people around here seem to be against the ad than for it:
It is too early to measure the reaction of Lakehead's target audience to the ads, he said, but the verdict is already in from the university faculty, staff and students: They don't like the tongue-in-cheek campaign.

"We have a student body, faculty and staff that are incredibly proud of this institution, and their initial response to the campaign is that by appearing to put down President Bush, we are in fact putting down the university itself," Mr. Gilbert said.

Isabelle Poniatowski, president of the Lakehead University Student Union, said the students she has spoken to find the school's sales pitch "repugnant."

"As an educational institution there are much more appropriate ways to advertise than by bringing down other institutions or elected officials," she said. "Lakehead University is very near and dear to my heart. This is just not classy."
