Well I graduated from college last month (2nd degree actually, but first one in IT) and am hoping to get an IT job of some kind. Here is what I've got.

Associate of Arts Degree
Associate of Applied Science Degree in Computer Networking (Microsoft specialization)
Information Technology Certificate

^^^^^^All of the above were awarded from a local community college.

Also have CompTIA A+ and Microsoft MCDST certifications. Want to do Network+ but don't have the money right now.

Do I stand ANY chance of getting an entry level IT job of some kind? (A REAL job...) Or am I looking at Geeksquad and the likes?

why don't you just apply and see? There are plenty of people who have gotten themselves into positions despite being possibly lackluster in the education/skills department.

I've always found that rather puzzling. Why do companies want people from outside the area? Why not just hire from local colleges?

Because if the companies are in the South, they want employees from Northern colleges that are more rigorous, and people who aren't lazy. 😛

Generally they don't care where they come from. They just want good people. However, from the job seeker's point of view the larger the area that you'll accept the more jobs you can apply for. The more you apply for, the better your chance is of finding a good fit.
