graduate degree or certifications??

In my opinion, getting a 4 year degree is more useful than getting certifications in terms of finding a career, as these days, a lot of companies require a college education.

What about a graduate degree vs. certifications?

I currently work at a big name insurance company, and they offer lots of opportunities to further advance my skills. various insurance certifications and exams will be paid for, and even getting an MBA is paid for.

Knowing me, I probably cannot do both at the same time. For a person who wants to further myself in a certain industry(in my case, insurance), what would you guys think is a better route?

I'll still be working full time either way, so I"m already getting the experience. So what is a better choice?

And Im not talking just about me. what do you guys think in general? in your opinion and in any industry.

I don't know insurance so this is guess work but look at what direction you want to go and what is required to do so. If what you want requires both eventually which will let you get that first step sooner.

So basically if MBA is required in the higher echelons but a cert will get you in the middle faster than cert now MBA later. If you plan on leaving the company/insurance then I'd imagine MBA would be far more transferrable.

Depends on the industry, but in general, a grad degree will usually open up more opportunities than certs.

An MBA is not a graduate degree. It is a professional degree (like JD and MD). A graduate degree is an academic degree (like MS or PhD).

In general, the degree is better. It shows you have the intelligence and determination to be a thinker. A certificaton says you are certified for a narrowly-defined area. If you ever transition to a new job field, the degree will show your traits better.

Eh? I have *never* heard anybody say that an MBA is not a graduate degree. Anything that is post-undergraduate is a graduate degree. I have always heard "b-school" and "grad school" intermixed but nobody has ever said what you have.

I have both an MBA and I am a CFA charterholder. I may get my CRM and for craps and giggles a CAIA. I am bored.

An MBA is a graduate degree, just like any MA or MS.
