Hey guys, I know I should probably post this at the head-fi forums, but I'm a bit too lazy to sign up lol.

I'm in the process of building a new PC, and figured I'd like to get a new pair of headphones to go with it. I'm currently using a Labtech headset, but since I am using a headphone 98% of the time, and my Altec Lansing speakers only 2% of the time, I figure I should upgrade and get a decent pair of headphones. I'm no audiophile, so I plan on using the onboard sound of my nforce4 Ultra motherboard (I've always used the onboard sound of my motherboards, and I've been satisfied with the sound). My uses for the headphones are:

- Watching Anime and movies (65% of the time)
- Playing online games like Battlefield 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Guild Wars, etc. (20% of the time)
- Listening to MP3's (15% of the time)

I do plan on listening to music more though, once I get better headphones. Truthfully, I'm pretty happy with these labtech headphones, but I'd like to see what "good" headphones sound like. I don't care if they're closed/open-air etc. I think I've narrowed it down to:

1) Grado SR-60
2) Sennheiser HD201
3) Sennheiser HD280 Pro

My main question is, can my onboard sound on my nforce4 ultra motherboard sufficiently drive the above headphones? Which ones are better at positional audio? Those HD201's are only like $20, so if the Grado SR-60's around much better, I'll just get those :-D.

Thanks very much in advance for your help/opinions!

EDIT: I did have a pair of Sennheiser HD490 awhile ago. They are open-air I think and sounded pretty good, even though most audiophiles seem to say they're pretty bad. I guess the SR-60's should blow them out of the water in terms of sound-quality?

hd497's are equivalent to the sr60's;. cheap at amazon
and can be driven without extra amp
with positional audio it also matters what soundcard you have..newest creative probably best
my guess is open is better for positional..i dunno

the grado sr60's are the king of the budget headphone world. your gonna have to spend a lot more to get a considerable increase in SQ from those headphones. they have what those nutty audiophiles like to call "synergy" when paired up with the right source.

Ok, so will they sound ok with the onboard sound of a Abit AN8 Ultra (nforce4 ultra chipset)? Thanks again for the replies, please keep them coming! :)

Heh, I'm in an opposite position as you ricemarine, I've never tried closed cans yet :)

Any other opinions? My main questions are if the onboard sound of an nforce4 ultra motherboard can drive a Grado SR-60 well enough (Or do I need to get an amp?) and if the Grado SR-60 has decent positional audio for games like BF2?
