Grad students, what do you do about health insurance?

I'm thinking of grad school, so I was wondering what my options are as far as health insurance goes? How much is it going to cost me per month? What are some good health insurance companies out there? Dental is totally separate from health right?

Check with your school. They will offer various levels. Many offer at least a hospitalization plan.

well I have that but still have to pay for HI....amounts to $ 100 PM and is provided by a private party working with the University.

I start next fall, but I will be under the school's health plan and it'll be paid for by my fellowship.

I'm sorry to hear that. I thought that nearly every university covered the students that receive aid from the university itself.

By the way, I noticed that your profile states that you're from Cincinnati. Are you going to UC? I also live in Cincinnati -- I work on the eastside (Anderson Township). I went to Miami University.

Oh yeah. My brother went to UC, so just from hanging out with him, I'm somewhat familiar with Clifton.

By the way, $100 per month also sucks. At the job where I work, it's about $65 per month (for the wonderful HMO coverage). And considering how often people here at work are going into the doctor for very stupid reasons ("I have a cough! I need to see the doctor!"), there must be a really large number of high-risk people on the plan you're on.

anyway ...it's OK with me cos' it covers everything in practice ...although the plan does not say that.

Last year I had a bill of $ 1000+ ( mainly due to drinking and resultant accidents )and did not have to pay 1 cent !!

lawaris, you ARE the high-risk person. People like you are the ones causing your plan to cost $100 per month. But I'm sure you already thought about that.

Typical health insurance runs about $2000/year for an individual. If you buy with a large group of people, the price will fall drastically. At my university all students, faculty, and staff can get health insurance at $500/year. I bet all universities have some sort of group plan like that. However, since I am a grad student, I get my health insurance paid for me by the university - I'd say about 50% of universities will pay for grad student health insurance.

For me, that doesn't cover dental or eyes. So my total cost is $100/year since I pay for those out of pocket. Your university plan may include them.

Are you still under 25 years old? If so your parents health insurance will probably still cover you even though you are a grad student.
