Grad school housing options

Hey all, I am starting grad school in the fall and I will have to move out of the nest. I don't mind having roomates but I NEED a bedroom to myself. Sharing a washroom and a kitchen is not a problem. The only thing is that I am an Indian and I know people from other backgrounds don't like to bunk with Indians (atleast in my soon to be alma mater).

Anyways, what is the best way to find housing? Any tips or ideas on how people have found good roomates will be most welcome. The school is University of Michigan btw so if any people living near the North Campus or people who have lived near there in the past want to share their experiences, I am all ears.

PS. 1000 posts. I waited a few days to make sure its not a nef post 🙂

depends on where you are moving.

See my post.

Cliffs notes:

Ann Arbor

Choice between University housing or private housing
Trying to make decisions early so I don't run in to problems
Need tips to find good roomies

ann arbor... that rules out sleeping in a tent in the city park.

Seriously, check with some 2nd-3rd year grad students in what ever department / area group you are going to be assigned to. Moving into a house that already has a routine, schedule, and a system for dividing costs will be a lot less headache than trying to get 3-4 people together and starting from scratch.

craigslist for detroit usu. has some ann arbor stuff in there. Did you visit U of M because often departments will try to hook you up with some resources when you visit.... call the grad program coordinator.
