GPUGRID - idle gpu's to use

Only 5 active participants from the TeAm in GPUGRID, so I'm going to put 4 of my gpu's on the project. They were sitting idle since I'm taking a break from F@H.
It's going to be cold outside the next couple of days, so this should help keep my condo nice and warm.

I am shutting my GPUs down for a bit, they aren't nearly so nice as yours...

That, and the $200+ power bill I received today :awe:

So, I pay something like $.10 per kWh? Average? High? Low? If that sounds wonky I'll go double check my bill...

My energy provider has a fix rate program of $0.08/kWh for five years. Thinking of switching to that. Apparently I can cancel or switch to another rate at anytime without penalty.

actually... i'll be hopefully bringing a computer back up that has two gtx260 and one gtx 275 sometime this weekend.. all on water... i don't use it at home much anymore.. was going to take it to my lab on campus.

July 2011: $126.00 / 1872KWh = $0.07/KWh
February 2012: $174.87 / 1313KWh = $0.13/KWh

...that's quite the KWh price fluctuation over 8 months...i'll have to look into that.

Mine comes out to be about $0.09 per kWh after taxes, etc.
$152.77 for January at 1,725 kWh.

In analyzing the bill, it is such a scam, not that I have many choices. Franchise cost, energy efficiency program costs, environmental cost recovery adjustment costs, taxes, various distribution charges. Ouch.

Once the weather starts to get mild again, I'm going to have to shut the gpu's down. They make it a little too warm in my place.

When the Nvidia Kepler cards come out I am planning on adding whatever is the best performance/watt from that lineup to a 2nd system to compliment the gtx 580 sli system I am currently running.

Nice :awe:

I wish I had that ready to roll.

Same for all you guys with all the GTX 460s. for all of you who have made that investment.

I am actually watching the 7770/7750 from AMD and hoping that they have ~2x the compute muscle of the 5770/5750 at the same power load. It has been something like three years, so I can dream, right? I know they are only saying something like ~40% improvement in gaming right now...

I've had to shut down all of my gpu work. Just got home and it is 82*F in my condo. Sure, I face west and it was a nice 42*F today, but 82*F inside is just a little insane.

Me thinks it is time to move. Too bad the housing market is about 200% below value where I am at.

what about opening some windows? i would think that you could open some of them just enough to keep the room temp at ~70°F (not too hot, not too cold)...

yeah, hey, i was wondering if you were running the heat as well. i can't imagine that with 42°F weather outside, you're GPUs alone are heating the home to 82°F...you had the heat on too, right?

No, no heat. I was working from home all winter and was able to open the windows as needed to keep the temperatures tolerable. Just started a new job Monday and am no longer home during the day. So, I am at the mercy of the computers and gpu's keeping things warm here.

Right now it is 79*. Just opened the windows and got yelled at by my wife. Something about a draft and her and our daughter getting sick from it...:rolleyes.
So off the bedroom to watch the blackhawks maybe, finally, potentially, win a game (please no hex).

I'm on the second floor of a 2 story condo unit that faces west. It gets HOT. My heat has turned on three times this winter. all three times is when I have had the computers down for maintenance over night.
Silly Chicago winter this year.

I'm in the NE, and I keep my windows open most of the time, unless it's really cold outside.

I heat my apt with my DC work. Well, that, and the neighbors have their heat on too. So between both of those, my place stays toasty warm.

I wish I could do ATDC again... my electricity averages around $0.22/kWh if I put all my computers in full gear. Over 100% of the utility's company "Baseline" puts me at around $0.30/kWh and it only increases from there at 50% intervals above the baseline.

You could always run just a few (sacrilege, I know), but it would allow you to participate a little bit. I'm limited to two at home, so I have a couple of work machines running on the side.

Upgraded Nvidia drivers to the 295.73 released yesterday and forgot about compatibility with GPUGrid. Now it looks like all my work units are erroring out. Not sure how long before it will get fixed; I hate to downgrade to the previous version because I noticed a performance gain in SW:TOR with the new drivers.

yeah i know, but what's more important? games or scientific computing? 😉
