GPU Usage spiking

i have the ASUS AMD Radeon HD 7770 1GB. Even so often my monitor blacks out, just for 1 second and then everything comes back and is fine, however this happens quite frequently. I have been monitoring it using Asus GPU Tweak. Everything is how it should be, with no applications open my GPU usage is always less than 5%, but every now and then GPU usage keeps spiking to around 94%, and then going straight back down to around 5%, just for a split second, which is causing my monitor to black out just for a second, its not a big problem but its something i would like to get sorted out. Does anybody know what the problem is?
