Well... Actually could not get his asrock extreme 4 to reconize my old 5770 so I tossed in my 7970. Of course that worked like a champ. Now my machine sits without a GPU. Excuse to upgrade. Or maybe run two 7950s in xfire. System specs are below. I play on a 24 inch @1080 and duplicate screen to a 55 plasma.

I'd use this as an excuse to test drive the equivalent Nvidia card. If it ends up worse, your son won't know the difference 8)

That's was my first thought. He is only 12 and a PS3 gamer.

My options seem to be (feel free to add)

1. 7950x2. 500$
2. Replace 7970 380$
3.770 400$
4. 780 650$
5. Wait for new GPUs and roll with old 5770

780 all the way :|

Were you actually looking for more performance than the GHz?

You'd need either MGPU or the 780 for that, otherwise get him a 760 or 7950 and get your card back imo.

option 5 is a good one. in october AMD HD 9970 / HD 9950 are launching and there could be some price changes to existing Nvidia products like GTX 780. it might be worth the wait. also BF4 is expected to be bundled with these high end AMD cards.

Where are the new cards, it's been almost two years since the 7970 launched...

lol wow how sad if they're 28nm I think I might vomit in my mouth.

On a single screen crossfire is fantastic now. I can enable 8x AA at 1080p in Crysis 3 with the 13.8 drivers where before 4x was the most I could stand. I would not hesitate to recommend 7970 or 7950 xfire.

Get your son a GT 610. If your he want's to play with the big boys, he should earn his own graphics muscle.

Joking aside. unless you go Crossfire, AMD doesn't really have anything stronger than the Radeon 7970 at this time. Might be worthwhile to wait, but if your son is mainly a PS3 gamer, I'd recommend simply getting him a lower end card, and taking back your 7970.

TSMC 20nm is not ready till Q2 2014 for volume production. 20nm GPU products won't be out till June or July 2014. Even on 28nm if the HD 9970 can provide Titan peformance at USD 550 - 600 in Oct 2013 it would be an excellent product. also the BF4 bundle would be an added attraction.

I don't think AMD is offering games with their cards right now, Nvidia is offering one though.

ahh, I think they'll be doing it again at the end of the month. This all assumes the OP doesn't have the games though, so attraction may vary.

1 - Get him a 7850 and put the 7970 back in your PC if you want to save

2 - Get 2 GTX 770 (SLI) or 2 7970 GE (CF)

I'm almost in the same position, except I only has the iGPU at the moment.

And since 7950/760(crossfire/sli) is 20% cheaper than 780 at the moment, at least in Norway, have I been thinking that that might be the way to go. Alternatively go with a new 7970 or 770. The 780 is just to expensive at the moment

That 7970 isn't going to help his PS3 much

Seriously though, I say stick it out with the 5770 and wait for the next gen to drop. GCN and Kepler are pretty damn old now, and hopefully their replacements will roll round soon enough.

sounds like some good advice,
if he is happy with a PS3, he is probably not going to notice the difference from a 7850 and 7970 that much...

Has nobody actually read the OP's post?

He's gaming at 1080p. Unless he's looking to play Crysis 3 with absolutely everything maxed and AA as high as it can go, crossfire/SLI is a gigantic waste of money with this level of card at that resolution.

A 7950, 7970, 770, OR 780 are all going to handle 1080p with all the bells and whistles without so much as a hiccup in everything but the literal handful of games like Crysis 3 that are more e-peen graphics benchmark than game.

Buy whichever one's cheapest and enjoy.
