GPU to be paired with a Core 2 Duo E6300

I have an E6300 in an HP computer that can't be overclocked. Would a gts 450 be a good match for this cpu? If not, what would be? and is it worth buying a new motherboard to overclock this cpu?

Gts 450 won't be too bad. May or may not be used to its full potential, the card that is. A gtx 460 would remain largely untapped

are you sure that is not the newer Pentium E6300 as a Core 2 Duo E6300 is REALLY old? a 1.86 Core 2 Duo E6300 is not even going to meet the minimum requirements for most newer games. not only is 1.86 abysmally slow but clock for clock that cpu is noticeably slower than even newer Core 2 duos were never mind the newer architecture cpus. really that whole pc would likely be inadequate for modern gaming at this point.

if its the Pentium E6300 then a gts450 level of card is fine but you did not mention resolution. and of course the power supply would have to be replaced.

Well the games that are meant to be played aren't very intense. They're mostly League of Legends and Diablo 3. The resolution would be around 1440x900 or something around that.

the gts250 is sufficient. Anything better would be a cpu bottleneck. My old rig was the core 2 due e6400 and a 9800gtx+ (just a tad slower than the 250)

you did not actually my question though. is it really an old 1.86 Core 2 duo E6300 or a 2.8 Pentium E6300???

if its really that old Core 2 duo then everything on a pc that old is probably insufficient.

These cards are still not that great. And I don't think that CPU can max out diablo3, I doubt if low-med would be playable

Get a 6670. Much better match and no new PSU needed. If you really need nvidia, then gt440.
you don't even know what power supply he has though. its either a 250 watt with 14 amps or 300 watt with 19 amps. neither of those power supplies can come close to making their advertised power in real world conditions even when brand new. if its really an old Core 2 duo E6300 then the cheap power supply would be way to worn out to safely power any card.

Well, I guess I'm not too concerned when it comes to the 6670. But yes, more information is also helpful.

OK thanks for the input guys. Yes, it is the older core 2 duo e6300 1.86 ghz, so I'll probably just sell the c2d rig and go for a newer quad core rig. Would the gts 450 still count as a decent card for the games i listed?

you should have no problem what so ever with it with those games and the resolution you are playing. you really dont need an ultra powerful GPU unless you want the highest IQ and resolutions. But for your system its your CPU thats would really hold you back.

You could probably find a used socket 775 quad if your interested. most games developers want their games to be playable across a variety of computers and the socket 775 quads even though they may seem old are every bit as good as the phenom2s quads. If you upgraded your old CPU with a used 775 quad you would be able to play any game you wanted. I have seen these CPUs getting sold for pretty cheap used. its just a thought.

You would be pretty surprised how well these older quads do in today's titles. I know because i have a one clocked at 3.4ghz and i have no issues with playing the modern hit games (skyrim, bulletstorm, ACreed Rev., batmanAC, crysis2, etc). I have decent fps, more than ppl expect. For the most part my fps isnt much different than the reviewers even though my processor is so old. Of course i have a upgraded my GPU many times and who knows how much longer i will get away with this old CPU. But as for now, its crazy that i am having no issues after all these years. i mean none yet.

The 775 intel quads were way ahead of their time. If you could land one cheap, it would make a difference for sure.

Not going to happen. It's one market that just doesn't justify itself.
