GPU Temperature, ~80C OK?

I am running a XFX Radeon HD6850 @ 850MHz Core, 1125MHz Memory.

When playing BF3, the fan spins up automatically and is extremely loud... With temperatures hovering around the 60C mark. It has gotten better with the Antec P182SE case with the padded side panels and no side vent, however I still prefer it to be quiet...

Thought about it today, and in Catalyst I can specify the fan speed... Figured why not give it a shot, so I set it at 30% fan speed, which makes the CPU fan louder than the GPU fan.. And the card did get hotter, reaching a maximum of 81C, but hovering around 75C.

Should I not be worried at all about those temperatures?

If so, and this is a pointless thread, I'm happy because that means my computer is nearly silent while playing BF3 🙂 (CPU barely hits 60C; passively cooled 😎)

Good lord. My GTX 470 goes to 81C in BF3 and I've had a 8800GT burn up to 105C one time (as it turns out, putting a 8800GT in a mini HP tower case isn't a good idea).

So yes you're fine.

I would say the maximum that people should ever go is 85-90C for a GPU and even then you probably need to do something about the case... unless if its designed to run that high (like the Radeon HD 4850 when it first came out...)

I think that 75C should be well within the safe range of operating temperatures.

After a bit longer of a session, 81C was reached... Bumped it up to 35% and I should be good to go 🙂

Turns out if your video card is too loud, just set it lower! (With good case ventilation, of course!)

My Gigabyte Windforce GTX460 1GB OC card gets to 68-70C under heavy Distributed Computing load (99% GPU usage).

I leave the fan on auto, and even at 60% fanspeed, it's inaudable.

Windforce cards have great cooling, that's also quiet... I suppose that's why they're always recommended!

I have the single-fan XXX-edition factory overclocked card... Wish it was a dual-fan card! I haven't seen it in stock at any retailer in a while...

I've always viewed anything less than 90c to be acceptable as far as what the card can take, but you shouldn't really be seeing anything into the 80's unless you're running crossfire or are heavily overclocked.
