GPU Temp Problem (VF-700 at 83c LOAD???)

Little problem, if you havn't noticed by the title of the thread, my 7800GT is running at 83c LOAD!!! Now, there are a number of other things to consider. I have SLI setup so thats twice the heat. Now what I think the reason for such high temps is my X-fi is squezzed between the two 7800GT's since thats the last (and only) PCI slot left on the mobo. It looks very close to the VF-700 cooler and the backplate from the other VF-700 is bending a capacitor on my sound card (no biggy there, just had to install the card right and capacitor got out of the way, by bending some more...;) ).

Now, my case fans don't move squat and already ordered some new ones. These will be the new case fans: 2x70cfm at 29dba at 120mm. Also 2 90mm fans at 50ish cfm at 29dba. Sounds like good specs to me considering my stock fans run at 1400rpm, sure there quite, but they don't even move 20cfm (probably).

Now, will upgrading my fans help my gpu temp, and what else can I do for my GPU? to help lower the temps? Kind of want to OC the cards...

Thanks :p

So... let me get this straight. You have a 7800GT SLI setup, with another (hot) card crammed between them, and bad airflow, and you're surprised they're running hot?

Now, will upgrading my fans help my gpu temp, and what else can I do for my GPU? to help lower the temps? Kind of want to OC the cards...

Improve the airflow and/or reduce the amount of heat in their proximity (ie, get rid of the sound card you crammed between them...)

And why would I want to sacrifice good sound for better graphics?

I know there running hot, I just want to know, what about another fan blowing on them, well that help temps? open up rear pci slot plates to get a little airflow?
I don't what to get rid of the x-fi...why would I? Is it time to go Silencer?

Look, I'm just looking for a few pointers to help lower my GPU load temp. I'm NOT removing my X-fi, it's a great sound card and I like it.

lol...you can be such a jerk sometimes...

I love Zalman products, all 3 machines in my house have something Zalman in them. In your case, however, I think you need to go with the AS. The vf700 is choking on its own hot air in a setup like that. New fans will help but unless you can get a lot of airflow over the Zalman, it won't help that much (maybe 5-7c or so).

Can you switch the sound card with another PCI card that doesn't put out as much heat? That might help as well.

Open up the side of your case.

A small table fan set to low or med (whichever your ears can handle) works really well to get the air circulating.

I have one GT with a Silencer in the bottom slot and a GT CO in the top slot. My top card almost hits 80*C while playing FEAR.

Ouch, I just realized you arent overclocking. Mine are running 500/1150...

Make sure your fans are running 100%, mine were set to like 43% or something dumb like that until I flashed my BIOS. I think you can control the fan speed through RivaTuner.

Well, now with new case fans, opened up PCI slot covers in back, and with a fan blowing right on the 7800GT's, It hits upper 60's under load. I think thats a major improvment from 83 right?

Sounds like it's alot better now though those temps don't really worry me. My 7800GT @ 470/1100 gets to 78ish under load with the VF 700cu @5v and it has never crashed. Good job getting them down so far, I may have to implement something like that to cool down my stupid PWM IC.

Definitely! You are out of the danger zone.

If you want to OC you will have to look into more aggressive cooling solutions.

Well, with the replacement of my case fans my CPU temp also dropped ~5c. Running at 1.4 volts it normall got pretty hot (~50c), now it's like ~46c under full load <-for CPU

23 degrees celsius? Yeah, that 's huge.

Good job man.

Overclocking time. Dosen't seem to get over 62 in Half-Life 2. But thats after I quickly exit the game and look up the temperature. Soo my guess would be it's around 65 full load. well, a hell of a lot better than 83.

RivaTuner charts temperatures and clockspeeds. Look for the icon with the magnifying glass and filmstrip, and leave it open in the background.

This sounds like a pretty poor motherboard design.

Run some FEAR or something that is actually gonna tax your cards. In COD2, my top card reached 73*C, FEAR put my top card at 79*C. Other games such as BF2, HL2 and Starship Troopers only sent my top card into the mid-high 60's
