GPU scaling on an HDTV with non-square pixels?

I've come into possession of an old "HDTV", a 42" HP with a native resolution of 1024x768 and a 16:9 aspect ratio. It supports input of up to 1920x1080, but anything except 1024x768 uses a built-in scaler. Is it possible with the current catalyst control center, to output at 1024 and use GPU scaling to get more workspace? The built-in scaler adds a lot of input lag, but 1024 is really too small to be useful.
